Suggestion for mid-size 22 auto?

I have a Ruger with 5 1/2 inch bull barrel (very accurate, but large and heavy), 4 inch SW model 18 (heavy and not very accurate, but was my dads so it stays), and a Taurus PT-22 (better than I expected on all fronts)

What I'm looking for is something between the Ruger and Taurus in size and weight (maybe a barrel around 3 1/2" to 4 1/2") ,very accurate and reliable. I'd like something light and easy to carry but that would still be good for informal target shooting and a companion when woods bumming. Single or double action OK but DAO not.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion 9mm, but I just have not got the accuracy out of 22 revolvers that I have out of semi's. Could just be bad luck though.

The Walther P22 looks great. If I were getting a 22 that didn't need to be bullseye accurate, I'd get one of those.

Why not another Ruger MKII with a shorter & regular barrel? You already like it. Or you could get one with the polymer frame for increased lightness.

Blue Duck, you just described a Hammerli Trailside to a "T".

I just bought one Friday and have already put about 400 rounds through it. After the first 40 rounds or so through each magazine I haven't had any more problems. It does use plastic mags that need a little break in. Except for 2 misfires. Light primer strikes.

Mine has a 4" (maybe 4.5") bbl, fixed sights and plastic grips. Only thing I don't like are the grips. They flare out at the bottom and have a small ridge on both sides that falls right under my finger. They're also plastic or a hard rubber. I'm building a set of grips for it.

This one is definitely a keeper and will probably be one of my most used pistols.

Let us not forget the
Beretta Model 87 in .22 LR. This
gun has a 3.8" barrel and the gun
weighs only 20 oz unloaded.Up till
a few yrs ago it was a DA/SA gun,
but is now put out as a SA gun ,so
you have your choise because you may
still be able to get a DA model if
they have one on a back shelf .
You don't want the 6" Target Model.

How about a Ruger 22/45 with 4 inch barrel. The Walther P22 also sounds like a nice .22, although I haven't seen one yet.

Good suggestion...almost!!! Get the Ruger P4. It is the polymer frame 22/45 with a 4" bull barrel!!! Mine is a tack driver!! (or would be if my eyes were 20 years younger!!! )

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Checked out some info on both the new P22 and Trailside, both seem to have a few "issues" with several new users so I'm not really sold on them. The more compact Rugers look nice, but variety is the spice of life and I've already got the full size.

The mention of the Old Walther PP and Berreta 87 reminded me of how much I wanted one or both many many years ago and just kept putting them on the back burner till I forgot about them. Think I'll keep an eye out on Gunsamerica till I can find a decent deal on one or the other.

Thanks, Blueduck

You might want to take a look at the Phoenix Arms HP-22. It's inexpensive and can have a 3 1/2" and a 5" barrel. You should be able to find one in the range of $80 - $160, I wouldn't pay over $120 though(unless it was the full Rangemaster kit).

It is, for the most part, reliable and a cheap plinker. I wouldn't carry it though, unless I had nothing else.

Buckmark Micro. 4" barrel, alloy frame, great trigger, comfortable grip, well layed out and easy to use controls, more accurate than my 5 1/2" bull barreled Ruger. Plus you don`t have one already. :) Nuff said. Marcus

The Buckmark Micro is a very good gun, 32 ounces, but a little heavy.

It is more shootable than the lightest Ruger.

The old S&W model 422 or 622 in 4.5 " barrel is excellent, 22 ounces and can take a 12 round magazine. Some used ones come with a 12 round mag.

The old Beretta model 70s is perfect. 3.5" barrel, 26 ounces. Mine holds nine rounds. The old Bernadelli model 80 or model USA is nearly identical to the Beretta 70s.

I would steer clear of the Phoenix HP-22.

I will agree with alot of the above posts...FEG smc 22 , walther
size and nice gun. The Phoenix 22 target/non target are really
nice also...I had one a while back and once broken in. It went
bang everytime I pulled the trigger. Also, just to throw in something different. Look at the AMT Auto mag 2..its a 22 mag.
and comes in a shorter barrel length...I have seen them but
never shot one...supposed to be dependable and nice.
