So this past week I was out and about visiting family in AZ.
Brought everything I had down with me and managed to make it out to the range with some buddies of mine. The wife of one and the girlfriend of another decided to tag along for this trip.
My friends wife wasn't exactly new to shooting, but she never shot a centerfire handgun before (started her off last time with a .22LR handgun and she loved it. She was particularly fond of my AR15 though. The women's a natural, printing some pretty nice groups right off the bat at 50 and then 100 yards. With open sights not less)
My friends girlfriend was the more interesting case. While the Conditions were not ideal (range packed, many large bore guns going off all around us) I tried my best to keep her anxiousness as low as possible.
Started her off with the same .22LR handgun I used with my friends wife, decided to have her sit down and rest it on a small stack of sandbags to give her a bit more Control (never fired a firearm before)
Loaded a single round into the magazine and slowly guided her through the steps to get her on paper at roughly 15yrds.
By the end of the day, she was at least shooting within the targets rings and looking forward to coming back for another go. Perhaps even trying a larger caliber handgun (she showed interest in shooting my 9mm CZ75)
All in all, a very good range day, despite me spending more time instructing and observing, rather than being up on the line.
It's times like this that really brings joy to my heart. Time well spent IMHO.
