Subsonic .9mm

Hello all,

The other day I stopped in my local shop and all the had was Black Hills 147gr subsonic .9mm JHP. I know that sub rounds are quiter but do they have any other advantages over my normal carry round, GDS 124 +P? Also, is it a softer shooting round?

Thanks

Generally, accuracy will be marginally better. When a bullet goes from supersonic to subsonic in flight, it gets passed up by it's own shockwave. This pressure variation can slightly disrupt the bullet in flight. Folks who reload and shoot in bullseye pistol competition strive to make their loads just barely subsonic for best accuracy.

However, in a pistol that is not built for max accuracy like a Bullseye built 1911, you'll likely not notice any difference as the tolerances in the gun exceed any variation you'll see from the subsonic vs supersonic ammo.

To give more meaning to this statement - the speed of sound at sea level is 1116.437 fps.

Some rounds are already subsonic without being labeled as such, some are not.
