Subscription Guns

Sounds a variation of the ploy where someone asks for a deposit-and tries use that money to finance the manufacture. IIRC that was the problem with the Bren Ten, several incarnations of the Aut0Mag,and more recently the Merwin and Hulbert.

I’ve heard the term and don’t totally know either, but I think it has something to do with special orders from the factory.

I'm under the impression that it has to do with ordering a gun with a particular serial number -- something that was possible in the Good Old Days (whenever those were), but is no longer an option.

In the history of Great Britain, a variety of things (tanks, aircraft, artillery pieces) were paid for "by subscribtion" by private donation. A civic group, for example, would raise funds by selling "subscriptions" to a large number of people and when fuinds were raised would finance the (fill in the blank) which would then typically be marked with a plaque accordingly so it could be identified by it's users in the field.

In what context were the posts referred to by the OP written?

Dunno about subscription guns, but Vanya -- one of my NAA Mini Revolvers has a serial number of "KATHYS22." I ordered that one in... mmmm ... probably 2004 or 2005. Unless the rules have changed since then, it's still possible to get a custom serial number in some places.

My impression was that it wasn't a matter of a custom serial number (yours is waaay cool :D), but of getting in "at the head of the line" for a newly manufactured gun, and getting a particular number in the regular series. So "subscription" would equal pre-production. But what do I know...
