Subcompact wheelgun caliber and brand

Wanting a small snubby wheelgun, probably in .38/.357 in the under $400 range.

I own a Taurus 607 with 4" and like it. Considering a Taurus model 85 for around $300.

Seems that many people like the Ruger SP-101, and I've seen them on gunbroker for about $400.

Any other suggestions?

well LC, you will probably get 100 suggestions real soon. I like my Taurus 85 and I do carry it during summer months. A better carry would be the SW M66 with a 2 1/2" barrel. A little more weight, but more firepower... ;)

I've got an sp101 3" in .357... I shoot mostly .357 out of it, with the occasional .38's. Probably about 2000 rounds thru it at this point, about 300 of which were .38's. It is a great little gun to shoot, lots of fun. It is a bit heavier than the smiths, but I think it is stronger. Also allows for faster shot recovery. The extra inch of barrel doesn't hinder concealing it at all for me, I've always found that grip is hardest to conceal, not barrel. It also makes it "point" much more intuitively.

Considering the 4" .32 H&R magnum sp101 on this principle, but it's an exotic caliber that I'm not sure I want to get into.

Go get it! they are quite nice.

I think if you are willing to go the used route you could find as SP down around $300. As noted it is a bit heavier than a steel Taurus or S&W (the Model 60 is about 2 oz less than a SP). The weight and grip makes the gun a lot more comfortable to shooe with .357's. The SP having a grip stud allows a greater latitude in grip selection and configuration, too. Night front sights are offered for the SP (and S&W).

Get a older Blue or stainless S&W . They can be founf in 350 range and are I feel a better pistol than the new guns with locks.

Have you looked at the 605???

If a .38 is ok, get a Smith, 3 inch chiefs special. Its pretty small, light, and thin as a 5 shot. This is my normal carry since it is so easy to carry.
