Stupidest thing you've done

I need to ask a question but in doing so, will demonstrate extreme stupidity on my part. So, why not admit it and make it the subject of a topic?

The question is: will inadvertently firing two rounds of 9mm +p through a Sig 229 .40 injure the barrel/action/weapon/etc.? Yup. Not only is it possible for a 229 to fire the 9mm, it's possible for me to do it twice. I could say that the factory slipped one 9mm into a .40 box, but I don't think they'd do it twice. More than likely, I was loading my Glock 26 and 229 at roughly the same time at home, so a couple of rounds got mixed in. When it went off, I thought it was a squib load: minimal noise and recoil and the round didn't eject. I removed the casing, saw it had ruptured but didn't check the headstamp. I put the weapon aside, checked it for damage, but DIDN'T check the mag. I went back to the range and the second round was . . . you guessed it, another 9mm.

Since that time, I've put the ammunition in distinctly different places.

So that begs two questions: one, any damage (the barrel looks fine with no scarring or visible damage of any kind); and, two, any one else what to admit things like this?

I'll play :o I bought a glock rear sight tool but discovered I had the smaller model and needed the Big Dawg jobber. So being Mister patience I armed meself with a few files and 2 days later had a bast+++ized large sight tool. A less than patient dealer than harshly reminded me that Glock would have gladly exchanged the tools at no cost. So in my infinite brilliance I have a customized one-of-a-kind sight tool worth nothing but to me. It works fine and was therapuetic but smart not. :(

I was decocking a 1911 (I carry hammer down, one in the chamber) when my thumb slipped from the hammer...
BAM!
Right through the base board heat...fortunately, it missed the hot water pipe).
Try explaining THAT to your wife (she was at work at the time).

When I first got my Glock (12 years ago), I was done shooting and was about to put it in the factory carrying case. I ejected the empty magazine. Then, as Glock owners know, one must pull the trigger to fit the pistol in the case (there is a plastic boss that fits into the trigger guard). Well, just before I did that...I thought, maybe I better...so I racked the slide...yep, there was the last round.
I would have had a tough time explaining to my insurance company how I shoot my windshield out!!
The Glock was my first semi-auto...not my last though!

Once, while in the military, after a BORING 12 hour mid-shift, I refueled my diesel van with unleaded gasoline. My patrol supervisor was less than happy.

(1) Bought a Jennings J-22.

(2) Racked the slide with my finger still on the trigger. Left a hole in the ground about 12" from my right foot.

(3) "Hollywooded" the cylinder on a S&W 629 Classic repeatedly, not knowing that it was the easiest way to ruin a revolver.

(4) My buddy recently shot a hole in his bedroom wall with a Raven .25 while "cleaning" it.

Live and learn.

Many years ago, a friend and myself were “road huntin” (private land) for critters in a pickup truck. I had a S&W .44 mag and he was using a .45 SA Colt. Somehow, in the “heat of battle”, he accidentally picked up one of my rounds and BOOM. Luckily, it was a reload, and no harm was done to the firearm although my friend did receive a small cut on his hand due to the severe recoil.

My story has nothing to do with handguns but here it goes...
Years ago when I was 17 I went deer hunting by myself. My grandmother gave me a pair of my paps thick camo gloves because she insisted mine were too thin. I then grabbed my model 70 featherweight 30-06 and went out.
After loading the rifle I asked myself if it would go off from just the pressure of those heavy gloves. So I pointed it in a safe direction, inserted my finger into the trigger gaurd, and took off the safe...nothing! After walking about 2000 yds. I was "head down" trying to get through a thicket when I ran the muzzle right into a large tree.I didn't realize I knocked the safety off on impact.FINGER STILL ON THE TRIGGER I canted the rifle back to look down the barrel. BOOOOOM!!!!!!! and then silence.
When I got my "feelings" back I couldn't hear anything and found the rifle laying at my feet. I walked around in a circle for about 5 mins. saying " oh my God"!!! I had to have missed my forehead by about 4 inches or so because there was no hole in the rim of my hat!!! I have thought about that moment many times. It was terrible, but it made me one of the safest gun owners around!
NOW I'M ALWAYS THINKING SAFETY!!!(I didn't write this to make you guys think I'm an idiot,I just want you to THINK SAFE also) I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable life!
Don't be stupid like I was!!!!!!!!!

I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time this happened.

My old man had taken me shooting in the rock quarry along the Tamiami Trail (SW 8th Street or Calle Ocho) just past the concrete arches. We had set up our position and were on the far side of his Toyota pickup truck. We had a Winchester lever action single-shot .22 carbine, his Commander .45, and a SW M-17 with 6 inch barrel and scope.

Anyway, he gets to rocking with his .45 and I'm watching and grinning, collecting brass from the ground for reloading. He finishes and loads up the revolver for me. Well, this thing was a tad heavy and I struggled for the first three shots. On the fourth shot, the gun was too heavy and the barrel drooped as I fired. The bullet hit the hood of the truck and ricochetted, scaring us all. I flinched and fired off another round...this one into the front tire.

We had a long, silent drive out of that rock pit until we hit the highway back home. He still teases me about it to this day. You should have seen the grin on that 75 year old man's face when he gave me that revolver earlier this year.

He said, "If you take me out shooting, I'm gonna get even."

You could have stopped right there. ;)

1) My first time shooting a revolver, I felt my left (supporting) hand's thumb up. Nice little powderflash burn and I had to pick out pieces of powerder out of my thumb flesh with a xacto knife.

2) Did the same as you, but opposite, accidently loaded .40s&w ammo into my 9 mil clip...luckily it jammed when I racked the slide back.

3) My friend and I were visiting some people who had just gone shooting. They were debating selling my friend a 22 rifle and were showing it to him. One guy was holding the rifle, sitting down and my friend was looking down the barrel. He leaned over to the other side, looking at the rifle's action and the idiot holding the gun accidently fired it, putting a hole in the ceiling. Needless to say, we left and never bothered dealing with them again.

Two stupid things:

(1) Mistakenly firing a .380 in a 9mm pistol. No harm done, but it took me a while to figure out why the slide wouldn't cycle! :o

(2) Forgetting that I was wearing an OWB holster on my belt rather than my usual IWB clipped to my waistband. I removed the belt, whereupon the holster and G26 dropped to the floor like a lead weight. Again, no harm done. But I sure did feel s-t-u-p-i-d. :o

I was just in the room when this happened and had nothing to do with it, but...

I am in a police station visiting a long-time friend. I'm at a bank of five urinals, far left is mine. As I unzip, in comes a plain clothes cop with a bit of a paunch. He unbelts, unzips, and starts to whizz when I hear a clatter and a deafening BLAM! The guy's pistol, cocked and locked Colt .45 hit the tiles and the bullet shattered the middle urinal. With my ears ringing, I zipped up and walked out of there very fast.

So, for you guys who insist on using 'field-expedient' ammunition in your handguns...

... how were they for accuracy???

at 14 years of age BEFORE I got my firearms training I was watching TV with my K-22 in hand. "Forgot" it was loaded. Saw a fly land on the wall and not thinking I.........well put it this way. Thank God the folks next door weren't home. My last problem in that area. Mom and Dad tossed my butt into a safety program.

Thankfully - this was not me, but this was definitely a very stupid gun accident:

A friend of mine has a chinese SKS to which he added a 30-round magazine. After a day of shooting, he tossed the SKS into his truck and drove home. Upon arriving at home, he realized that the 30-round mag has about 20 rounds left in. He decided to empty the rounds from the rifle. Instead of pulling out the magazine and cycling the action once, he decides to manually cycle all the rounds. Well, guess what - BOOM! A hole through several walls and a 123 grain slug into an oak tree in the back yard!

My biggest mistake - a Norinco 9mm.
