stupid AR15 magazine question

I've been considering buying an ar15 for some time, but I have a question that seems simple, but I haven't been able to find the answer - namely, when firing an AR in the prone position, do pre-ban high-cap mags contact the ground? I'm sure the ten rounders don't, but do the twenties and thirties?

The only stupid question is the one which isn't asked

The twenty rounder is a mite bit shorter than the pistol grip, so it's ideal for prone shooting. Save the thirty for sitting, kneeling and offhand.

BTW, except for John Browning, none of us are born gun wise and we all had to ask.

The ten rounders length depend on which one you have. I have seen several different brand ten rounders that were exactly twenty rounders that had been blocked. The thirty rounders are slightly longer than the twenties. As far as contacting the ground, it would depend on how exactly you go prone. If you go prone flat on your stomach with both legs extended back the same, then the thirty would probably contact the ground and the twenty would not. If you use a prone where you pull the strong side leg up and roll the hip so you are off your lungs, then the thirty rounder is fine and will not contact the ground.

AR magazines

Raver, My experience with the 20 round magazine in 1968 showed the prone position was not a problem. I was a grunt in Nam at the time.

The 20 rounders are better for most applications

While most of the AR magazines I own are 30 rounders, I shoot mostly with the 20s. You can get into most other shooting positions better with a 20 round magazine in the weapon then a 30. Presenting the weapon from either American or African carry is also easier.

My dept. stayed with 20 round magazines for the ARs in the patrol cars for just these reasons.

In a normal prone shooting position you should have enough clearance for the 30 rd mags to not touch the ground during shooting. I have never had a problem in the Army qualifying with the 20 or 30rd magazines in place.

I actually prefer the 30rd magazines for prone shooting. That way I can hunker down a bit more so the mag does contact the ground and use it to help stabalize the weapon on 300m shots. I'm sure someone will advise against this practice, but it has never produced any jams for me and helped tremendously on long range shots.

Just as a personal preference, I like the 20 rounders. They just seem to "feel" better to me with the movement of the weapon. I've got a couple of 40 rounders but those are only for standing or wartime mode. :D

Well....

In this case, I'd go for a Beta-C! :D ;)

Length of a 20 rounder and 5x the capacity!

Of course, the price is high.

It also depend on how long your arms are. I'm not a tall man, so the 30 round mags will rest on the deck, but a friend of mine that stands 6'3" doesn't seem to have this happen.
