Stupid 1911 Question

I have a rather basic 1911 question. What is the difference in the frames of the various models (Government, Commander, and Officers)Can you mix and match slides and frames??? Particularly can you take a commander frame and mount a full size gov. model slide on it???

Yes, to that specific question, but it will look funny, as will the switch the other way. Not all such switches are possible, and there are problems switching series 80 and pre-series 80 parts.

It's not a stupid question.

The Commander frame's dust cover will be too short. There will be about a 1/32" gap between the slide's spring tunnel and the frame's dust cover.
Commander and Officer slides will work on all three.
I echo Jim's point about series 80 parts.
Also, remember there are other parts like ejectors, recoil spring guides, spring plugs, and springs that are different between the different models.

Hi, TAZ,

After reading Sharps' post, I realized that neither of us mentioned caliber. I was thinking same caliber. Slides of one caliber usually will not work on a frame made for another caliber without changing the ejector. Things are not always as simple as they first appear.

Jim

Are you guys sure a commander slide will fit a GM frame, all things being equal? I thought the ejector's placement on the frame would prevent that. I'm talking Colt here, either 70 or 80.
I don't have a commander at hand so I may be full of it again. ;)
