stuff about Texas.

There's an awful lot of stuff to like about Texas, but I thought I'd list some interesting and trivial stuff that I like about her.
1. The only State in the Union which was recognized as a soveriegn nation by the United States. This is why the Texas flag can be flown on the same level as the United States flag during displays.
2. Texas is allowed to claim 200 miles off the coast as her own territory to regulate, and reap the profits from. Other states can only claim 20 miles. This comes from the agreement allowing Texas into the Union.
3. If seperate from the nation, the Texas economy would be the 12 largest in the world.
4. Home to Pan-Tex, the nations assembly place for nuclear weapons thus making Texas Ground Zero for anyone's first strike!
5. The Texas National Guard has the world's largest armored division, the 49th (lone star) division.
6. Home to the 'could be better known' but outstanding brewery in Shiner.
7. The Texas revolution was fought to restore the Mexican Constitution of 1824. The Alamo battle flag was a mexican flag with the numerals: 1824 accross it to remind Santa Anna why they were fighting. A few months later, Texas enjoyed one of the world's greatest military routes when they whooped the Mexicans in under 20 minutes.
8. Texas having seceeded with the Confederacy, was only allied with the Confederate states. This is why the Texans wore such distinctive uniforms.
9. The single star appearing on most military vehicles comes from WWI when Pershing needed an identifier for American equipment. He noticed that all the Texas Vehicles were already painted with the lone star, so he made the rest of the military do the same. It stuck around for a long time (80 years), but I believe the practice isn't as wide-spread anymore.
10. The final battle of the civil war was fought near Brownsville a while after Lee's surrender. The word hadn't reached them, and they fought (and lost I think) to keep their trade routes open through Mexico.
11. Texas' state Constitution is possibly one of the longest and most amended Constitutions in the world.
12. Texas may still break itself into 4 separate states gaining 6 more Senators. They probably wouldn't do that because just imagine the fight over who would lay claim to the Alamo.
13. The spark that ignighted the move for Texas independance was when the Mexicans (like their Brittish brethren) decided that the Colonists were a bit too well armed, and tried to take a cannon from the Colony at Gonzales. The colonist loaded the cannon, and pointed it into the direction of the battallion of Mexican troops with a flag that said "come and take it!". ( funny how gun-control either sparks revolutions, or preceeds genocides)
14. Texas is BIG--- REAL BIG.
15. Texas is the winter home to half the retired Yankees who couldn't afford Florida. The other half go to Arizona.
16. Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in Texas because the Mexican General Zaragoza (sp?) who expelled the French from Monterrey was a native born Texan.
17. Oh and we boast a large population of free-thinkers and freedom loving folks like Dennis and CMOS! :D
These are just a few things that make this state interesting and endearing to those of us who live here. Add more if you like.

I have some friends in Texas, and my wife are going to move their and spend my California government pension, when the time comes.

I promise not to vote. ;)

I'll tell you it's the wide-open spaces.

It's everything between the Sabine and the Rio Grande.

It's the Llano Estacado.

It's the Brazos and the Colorado.

It's the spirit of the people down here who share this land.

It's another burrito.

It's a cold Lone Star in my hand.

It's quarter for the Juke Box, boys,

Play some songs by your favorite Austin, Texas band!

You ask me what I like about Texas?

It's the big timber 'round Nacogdoches.

It's drivin' El Camino Real into San Antone.

It's the River Walk and Mi Tierra.

Dancin' to the Cotton-eyed Joe.

It's stories of the Menger Hotel and the Alamo.

It's another burrito.

It's a cold Lone Star in my hand.

It's quarter for the Juke Box, boys,

Play some songs by your favorite Austin, Texas band!

You ask me what I like about Texas?

It's Bluebonnets and Indian Paint-brushes.

It's swimmin' in the sacred waters of Barton Springs.

It's body surfin' the Frio.

It's Saturday night in Del Rio.

Drivin' 'cross the border for some "cultural exchange."

It's another burrito.

With a cold Lone Star in my hand.

It's quarter for the Juke Box, boys,

Play some songs by your favorite Austin, Texas band![/quote]

Like Texas? Let me count the ways ...

It's 90 degrees and 50 degrees within 3 hours in January at Corpus Christi -

It's blue northers in February -

It's outrunning waterspouts off Padre Island beach in a jeep or 6X6 -

It's tending bar at Nella's Bluenote on Lexington -

And it's knowing the gals visiting there.

It's watching a young sailor of wise experience win the bet on timing the downing of a bottle of Pearl ... Look Ma, No hands!

It's prepping for the hurricane -

It's enjoying a bucket of shrimp just in from the boat next door and popping Lone Stars to boot ... dirt floors and wood benches -

It's a visit to Reynosa, bullfight and "all" -

It's running down to Baffin Bay and to the King Ranch to fix the Navaids ... and finding rattlesnakes in the power supplies.

It's flying with Buster Coward at Rockport County airport and having my tie snipped after first solo -

It's picking up the pieces of aircraft and folks who had problems in the air -

It's birthing two babies - Texans by right.

Ah, yes - Why I like Texas - memories of 40 years ago.

Now - how do I get a case of Lone Star? :D

Wife was born in Waco. I was born 20 miles north of Texas (almost a Texan). I lived in Commerce, and Ft. Worth. Inlaws are in Marble Falls and mother in Denton. It's a great state, but a bit hot for me.

KJM: A coupple of minor quibbles: It's five states, not four. We have three-league limit (10.2 miles), rather than a three-mile limit. :)

And I get to see El Paso this week-only because my brother is going to work there. I get to move him, and the payback is going to cost him some Shiner. :D

500+ miles of I-10. Gosh, I am really looking forward to that.

It is the people who are prisoners of their own ignorance about firearms that pose the greatest threat to our 2nd Amendment Rights.

My good ole fried Darthmaum used to have a bumper sticker that read "Anyone can be become an American, but you have to be born a TEXAN" And I totally agree!!!! :D

Been here 20 some years and NO plans on leavin!
Been around the world, lived in most of the states, and can vouch for the truthfullness of that Texas Dept. of Tourism slogan.......
" Texas......It's like a whole other country!"

TEXAS......................???

Brings many thoughts and memories to mind.
Never lived there, but lived next door to it all my life. All my in-laws and lots of friends there.

Basically, I like Texans. They're 'bout like Okies, just mouthier. :D There's no one I'd rather pick an argument with or aggrevate than a Texan. No one I'd rather have on my side in a fight than a Texan.

Texans have a unique sense of pride, honor, and loyalty. Anyone who can go to the Alamo and not get a lump in their throat ain't human. The state has a colorful history and rich heritage and they continue to display their independence today.

Yeah, the states got about everything one could want, but it's the people that bring it all together. Despite the fact they suffer from not bein' an Okie! ;)

The only time I just can't get along with them is the second Saturday of every October.
;)

God bless Texas!! And I don't care what you say, it is still the biggest state of the United States. People claim Alaska is bigger but I am convinced that if you melted all the ice Alaska would be smaller. Either way, Texas is part of the United States, Alaska is hanging out there off Canada, it isn't united with the rest anyway.

I flew to Austin for the weekend. I got in at 01:00 Sat AM. It was 86 degrees and humidity over 90%. The plane had been at 33,000 feet for a couple of hours and when we landed the outside cabin windows fogged up. I had never seen that happen. What great weather we have in May, it doesn't get really hot until July and August. At least I don't have to put up with snow.

Big Iron, "Anyone who can go to the Alamo and not get a lump in their throat ain't human."

Amen, Sir! And anyone who can read Travis' last letter out loud (without stoppin') ain't human neither!

Yes, Texas is unique! I liked living there during my stay with Uncle Sammy!

Would have lived there in a minute if the wife and my families were not here in Indiana.

Upsides: My son, born at Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft Sam Houston

Downside: One of my worst drunks was in Austin the weekend before leaving the Army. Had a blast---I think!

Thought it was five. One plus four more.

Keep in mind that if Texas gets too uppity - Alaska could divide in half and make Texas the thrird largest state.

<sigh> Ain't no place like Texas! I like the bumper sticker "On the eighth day, God made Texas."

I was born in TX and have lived here all my life ('cept for a short stint in FL during college). Man I love my state, ain't no where else like it on earth. We've got "mountains," deserts, forests, swamps, grassy plains, and seacoast, all wrapped up in the same place (if you don't mind drivin' a bit). :) People are different down here, we have a great sense of independence and pride (except maybe in Austin).

And if Washington don't cut out the cr@p and stop trampling all over people's rights, we may find ourselves a sovereign nation yet again!

I wish I could continue, but I am delerious with fatigue and am making no sense whatsoever! :o I shall continue when I am more awake....(ZZZZZZZZZZ)

What can I say about the greatest State :p in the Onion(sic) that hasn't already been said?

One glaring oversight is that no one has mentioned is that we have the most respected, honorable, professional, and colorful ;) LE agency/ Army in the US- the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team, you poodle-walkin' Yankee!!). I would be greatly honored to be counted a part of their ranks!

Yes, we ARE the biggest state. What gives AK the extra square mileage over us (and it isn't much in any case, IIRC) is all those little bitty islands that the State Dept keeps secretly giving away to the Russkies (per a previous discussion here on TFL). Besides, as Jeff said, just melt some a' that ice and then let's talk about land mass! :D

And, then there's the battle cry at the Battle of San Jacinto, that instantly reminds of the atrocity of despots, and speaks of a people who will not be trodden down...

"Remember the Alamo!! Remember Goliad!!

To the People of Texas & all AMericans in the World- Fellow Citizens and COmpatriots--

I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna-- I have sustained a continual Bombardment & Cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man-- The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise the garrison are to be put to the sword if the fort is taken-- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls-- I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid with all dispatch-- The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country--
Victory or Death

William Barret Travis, Lt. Col. Comdt.

P.S. The Lord is on our side-- When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn-- We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels, and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves--

Doesn't that put a lump in your throat.

By the way, although both California and Hawaii were once soveriegn governments, neither was recognized by the US Gov. therefore, Texas still has the distinction of being the only one being recognized, thus the special privledges she enjoys.
