Students Shot at New Orleans School

By ALAN CLENDENNING, Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Gunfire erupted at a middle school Tuesday, critically injuring two students, authorities said.

The shooting took place shortly before noon at Carter G. Woodson Middle School in uptown New Orleans, said David Bowser, a police spokesman.

Both students appeared conscious when were taken by ambulances to Charity Hospital, Bowser said.

There was no immediate word on suspects. Bowser said there had been several fights reported at the school in the past few weeks. It was unclear whether the shooting was related to the fights.

More than 100 parents rushed to the school and lined up outside as officials let small groups enter the building to get their children.

The two students were listed in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Jean Patterson.

quote:
NEW ORLEANS, La. (Reuters) - Two students were shot when gunfire broke out at a New Orleans middle school on Tuesday, police said. Police spokesman David Bowser said at least one of the two victims, both said to be males, was in critical condition at a city hospital. He said there was no word yet on who fired the shots or why. Witnesses said they heard gunshots coming from Carter G. Woodson Middle School, then saw students running to get away. "Kids started running out.... We went out in the yard and somebody was down," said witness Ruth Blunt. "(I heard) about four to five shots -- bam-bam, bam-bam-bam," Blunt said. "It is frightening, very frightening."[/quote]

Didnt expect to see this stuff for atleast another month. Maybe the Whore is worried about being behind on a poll or two. Wanna bet he or BillyBoy comes out and talks of needing more control not CHL laws like Bush signed in to law?

The teachers must have failed to tell their students that it is already a law and illegal to shoot people. That is is already a law and illegal to carry a conceled weapon without a permit. That it is already a law and illegal to carry firearms into school
zones. That it is already a law and illegal for minors to posess firearms. That there is a commandment "Thou shall not kill."

Of course , if these childern had been trained in the safe and lawfull use of firearms and the proper attitudes and responsibility that comes with owning a firearm; then , this never would have
happened.

It must be the teachers fault for mis educating our childern, or the schools fault for not hiring armed police protection or the governments fault for continuing a failed liberal gun free school zone ,zero tollarence gun control policy of which the occurance of this incident is proof of the
zero tollerance, gun free school zone program's failure.

But, instead, they will somehow twist the facts around and try to blame the NRA and law abiding gun owners.

They will try to use this failure of their program to call for yet more failure prone programs. Gun control does not work because
criminals wont follow the law, which is why criminals are criminals.

Where were the armed police guards that were susposed to be on duty in the school protecting the students? Is it not their job to protect our childern?
What, no armed police guards in the school?
Is this not like driving a car with no brakes. You can't stop the car and without armed police ,you can't protect the students.

Gun Free School zones and
ZERO TOLLERANCE DID NOT WORK.

HOW ABOUT THE STATE TRAINS AND ARMS THE TEACHERS SO THAT THE TEACHERS CAN PROTECT THE STUDENTS. Of course, the state will need to phyoanilize the teachers to find out which of the teachers are nutzo and not permitted to be trained and armed.

Do the reasonable thing like the israelies
did in 1972, Yea right--sure--not here in the usa.
Better to let childern die needlessly that
admit to yet another failed federal liberal
gun control policy and worst yet, take the proper steps to correct the situation.

Now lets get into a 14 month congressional debate into which steps are the proper steps

And some how , figure out a way to blame the NRA and law abiding gun owners living thousands of miles away for the whole thing, instead of taking responsibly for mis managing the school system and school laws.
Geeshee!
Where are my hip waiders!

Million Misinformed Mommies, My firearms are not responsible for the actions of your improperly brought up and improperly taught bad kids. Try taking responsibility for the consequenses of your own actions or lack of
actions instead of blaming law abiding gun owners who have nothing to do with and live hundereds of miles away from New Orleans.

Oh , LETS NOT LET GORE get any political mileage out of this tragity. He bears responsibility for his failed gun free school zone and zero tollerance policies.

Lets not let Gore pull a Slick Wille and somehow point the blame at the NRA and law abiding gun owners.
Neither the NRA or law abiding gun owners had anything to do with this but somehow we end up suffering and getting punished as a result.

Law abiding gun owners and the NRA are the most discriminated against minority in America today. And we are sick of it and have had enough and will no longer tollerate
any more of this abuse. It is totally unacceptable.

Apparently two idiot gangbangers got into a fight early in the school day. One got his tail whipped so he went home and got a gun, came back and shot the other idiot. Who promptly smacked the heck out of idiot # 1 and took his gun away from him and shot HIM. ..then they both realized they had been shot and collapsed. In Houston, while publicly moaning about "the children" the cops would be privately calling this a misdemeanor homicide attempt.

I don't know how long this link will work:

Living just outside the N.O. area, there's a lot more coverage on the incident.
Even though the police are trying to downplay any connection, it appears that most of the students who attend this school come from 2 different low income housing projects that have an urban Hatfield vs. McCoys thing going on. Fights between the 2 groups is common.
The school does have metal detectors that all students must pass through before entering.
There are also a couple of security guards who are apparently so restricted in what they are allowed to do as to be virtually worthless.
Parent involvement in the school is almost totally nonexistent. At a recent PTA meeting 3 parents showed up!
There was a stabbing at the school a couple of weeks ago that went largely unnoticed by the media.
On a bright note, if you can find one in a sorry situation like this, most of the criticism is not being directed at guns at this time. In fact, the only comment I've seen so far in the local news that blamed guns came from (who else?) N.O. mayor Marc - "I sued the gun manufacturers first" - Morial, who happened to be in Seattle at the time, probably jockeying for a post in a Gore White House.

So much for the vaunted metal detectors: "Armed with a handgun slipped to him through a gap in a chain-link fence . . ."

A Freerepublic poster dug up some pretty detailed info on the school at: MORE INFO

here's part of it:
"Yesterday, when I learned of yet another school shooting, I felt sick. My prayers went first to the victims, and then I prayed that the anti-2nd Amendment forces wouldn't use this tragedy to further regulate the rights of law abiding gun owners.

To my shock, the story didn't appear on the evening news. Then this morning, our two national 'papers of record', ran an AP article (neither story on page 1), abandoning their usual on site reporting/hype of such a tragic event.

Well, my curiosity got the better of me, so I researched the Carter G. Woodson Middle School in New Orleans and found some interesting information.

The school is protected by metal detectors and security officers who patrol the school and the grounds. The building is air conditioned and has the usual plethora of government school "services" including, a Mentor Program, a Speech Therapy Program, Peer Tutoring, Counseling, Parent-Child Computer Labs, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., I CAN LEARN, Title I, Token Economy, ESTAS, Breakfast Program, a Kwanzaa Celebration, Marching Units, Student Council, Yearbook, Newspaper, Poetry Club, Science Club, Intramurals, Honor Society, Choir, Athletics, Hostess Club, Chess Club, Money Market Club and a Drama Club.

The Carter G. Woodson Middle School carries a "Performance Label" of Academically Unacceptable.

Their web page lists as (not available) the Graduation Exit Exam results and their ACT scores.

The total student population is 661 students (98% of whom receive a free/reduced lunch), who are taught by a total of 24 teachers. That makes the student to teacher ratio a very acceptable 27 (+/-) to 1."

No wonder the incident was played down. All these government goodies and there STILL was trouble in Paradise.

Why didn't it get the press? It was in a project neighborhood. It wasn't a white, middle-class area.

If memory serves me correct, it's in the area around the Garden District, and that area's pretty rough.

And, it's gangs. Gangbangers don't make news.

This was a gang shooting anyway that you look at it. The 13-year old and the 15-year old were from two different housing projects which here in New Orleans means two different gangs. They had been fighting since the beginning of the year to determine whose turf the school fell under. Another kid who had been expelled came back with a 38 caliber pistol, slipped it under the fence to the 13-year old who proceeded to shoot the 15-year old. The 15-year old wrestled the gun from the 13-year old and proceeded to shoot the 13-year old. This does not surprise me since I live just outside of New Orleans and work there. I hear about shootings and killings in New Orleans every night on the news. It is no wonder that Charity Hospital in New Orleans is the number one trauma hospital in the whole southeast USA. New Orleans has hired Chief Pennington from Washington, DC to reduce the crime but he has not done anything significant. New Orleans hired Major Davis, an ex-marine, to run the schools but he has not had time to make much progress. If you have any solutions for us besides sending the Wrath of God upon us, we will welcome any help we can get.

Get the government out of our lives.

Cut off welfare to the illegitimate leaches.

Bring the virtues of Honesty and Integrity back into government.

Arm the teachers.

First, close the government indoctrination camps. I mean, schools. Clearly these institutions are driving kids insane. Refund the school tax money to the people and let them educate their children in private schools.

Second, close the projects, and offer each "family" living there a one-way bus ticket to a different city, and maybe $1,000 for relocation expenses.
