Strong firearm Durakote like finish

I have just ordered a new rifle. The insides are in a very good shape but the outside of the barrel is a bit rusty. So I want to paint the outside of the barrel with a strong wear and tear proof finish.
I know that there is Duracote and that brownels sells a few products as well. But I live in the UK and in this nanny state where firearms are very restricted and you are taxed to the max:barf: these kind of products are not available. So does anyone know of another kind of paint that I could use? Would heat proof paint that is normally used for BBQ / Exhausts give nice durable finish?

I've done a couple of "stained" barrels with engine exhaust manifold paint. Two or three light even coats with complete drying in between produced a very durable and presentable appearance. I used flat black as they were for hunting rifles. I'd do it again. Just make sure that the metal is completely clean before the first coat is applied.
