Strange, the things one can learn

Last night, watching parts of the Democratic convention broadcast, Caroline Kenneddy Schlossberg appeared. In her remarks, there was support for "gun control". Also mentioned was the fact that she had written a book on The Bill of Rights. Turns out that two people authored it, she and Ellen Alderman.

Anyhow, I got a copy of In Our Own Defense from the library today, and found the short discussion of The Second Amendment, which revolved mostly around the enactment of the infamous Morton Grove Il ban on handguns, though there was passing mention of Miller v. U.S.

According to Kennedy-Alderman,page 100 of the above mentioned book, The Court concluded, in Miller that "the right to keep and bear handguns is not guaranteed by The Second Amendment", which is rather strange since the subject of Miller was the possession of a sawewd-off shotgun, that had been transported in interstate commerce. Handguns were never mentioned.

I guess it is unkind of me to quibble over mere details, the goofs and or factual daring do of a well meaning, concerned, sweet young thing type female Kennedy, but I guess that is merely another of the failings that I will have to live with.

Iam however, willing to bet that if a Republican had made so outrageous a statement, that our stalwart media guardians of truth and virginity would be all over the offender, like a cheap suit.

As I said in the title, "Strange, the things one can learn".

Sent this along to Rush Limbaugh along with background on Miller v. U.S. Don't worry, I gave ya full credit. Again, great find.

Again, good find, Alan.

A bit more on "Miller"...

They wanted to nail Miller, a bootlegger and a petty thug; got him on the interstate transport of a sawed off shotgun. The SC's findings were (paraphrased): That, within in their (admitted paltry) knowledge, a short-barreled shotgun is not part of the military arsenal, therefore Miller is not protected by the 2nd A. This was in 1937-38....and the SC has intentionally avoided another 2nd A case because they would have to void Miller due to their erroneous conclusion about short scatterguns

One of the "benifits" of being retired is that there is lots of time to satisfy ones curiousity. Funny though, how the days fly by, leaving so many things undone.

On the other hand, ones eyes aren't what they used to be, there are all manner of aches and pains that didn't use to be there either. In any case, gentlemen, for your kind words and compliments, thanks.

This has been one of the more enlightening threads I've read in a while. (Yes, I was, of course, familiar with Miller)

Alan, you've done well. Keep up the good work, and please keep me informed of any other new epiphanies.

I thought it was fitting that there would be mention of preserving the rights of the citizens in respect to the right to privacy and the right to free speech .. but totally destroyed the 2nd Amendment as far as it was concerned.

Do these people think they can pick-n-choose which Amendments they wish to support?

In answer to your question, obviously yes, that is what this self annointed nobility thinks, believes and acts on the basis of. Unfortunately, in their endless search for Le cause de jour or the latest in "intellectual fashions", they loose track of important and basic factors as follows:

1. Noblese Oblige
2. No large, or important structure can stand upon seriously weakened foundations. When this dictum is ignored, it is done at ones peril, for structures so undermined, often collapse, leaving the "concerned, sweet young things", those who actively undermined the foundations sitting in the rubble, with puzzled expressions on their faces. They will also express dismay, upset and concern when their electric hair dryers no longer run, forgetting that they led the rabble who destroyed the power plants.
