Strange Idea

I had a strange idea last night that I think might have merit. A revolver that uses 9X23 Winchester in moonclips. You could also use .38 Super, 9mm Largo, 9x19, and .380 all in one gun (not to mention the fast reloads with moonclips). What do y'all think?

Not so strange. Someone made a revolver called a "medusa". It shot a number of 38 cal rounds, both rimmed and unrimmed. Got a friend that owns one. Don't know if they're still made.

People have converted 940's to 9X23

S&W made J-frames in .356 TSW as well, including comped guns. So far as I know it is unwise to convert most 9x19 to a higher pressure cartridge. I'd wonder about Ruger Blackhawk with 9X19 cylinders converted as being OK with the higher pressures and making extraction/ejection more reliable.

I'd be dubious, especially after looking at SAAMI's list of dangerours interchanges - there are tales of peening a rimless cartridge to have a rim and such for wartime use but failing a real emergency I'd be nervous.

Check out the Colt survivor. Kinda dorky idea though. Like Walmart is going to be out of 9x23 but have plenty of 9 largo.

And having headspace issues.

I'm not sure headspace is an issue when using moonclips. However, I was intrigued by your idea. I believe it might work except for the .380. I tried to fire .380 in my Taurus 905IB(9mm). It would fire, but the extractor groove is too small for the moonclips to hold the rounds. You could load and fire five, holding the rounds in the clip until seated in the cylinder, but the reload would be very slow. For emergency use only! :D

It has been done.
Rechamber a S&W M686 or other L frame to 9x23, machine for moon clips, and it will shoot 9x23 Winchester, 9x23 Largo, .38 Super, and 9mm P. The gun will still shoot .38 Special and .357 Magnum but brass will be bulged too much for safe reloading. .380 is undersize for this or the other gimmick guns. As Smince says, emergency use only.

Richard Heinie, noted 1911 smith has one done by Tom Kilhoffer and likes it very well.

Gary Reeder listed a Medusa type multicaliber revolver but I cannot now find on his website.
