Stopping Power-2

We seem to be generating more heat than light on this issue, but it is very important. You can do everything else right, but if you are defending your life and your chosen cartridge fails to stop your attacker (or attackers) you have had it.
Close quarter fcombat with firearms is stressful, frightening and confusing. You need every odds improving advantage you can get.
I suggest the best cartridge to use is the most powerful one that you can conteol in rapid fire. You have to determine that for yourself. Neither I nor anyone else can tell you what that is. If this is a 9mm, fine. That's the best choice for you. If you can handle a more powerful round go with it, but remember, you have to be able to control it under really bad conditions.

Having (thankfully) never been involved in CQC, there is little i can draw from first-hand to prove a point: no stories about the magic .45 CNS shot that knocked the 250 lb BG backed 5 feet while he was running towards me.

Still, it would seem to me that HOW you shoot someone rather than what you do it with will make the difference in a fight for your life...obviously you want to make the biggest hole you can, but if it means blowing an arm clear off a coked-up perp who's holding a gun in his other hand, instead of making a pin-sized hole in the middle of his head, then i think it's time to put away the bigger calibre (Canadian sp. See why i've never been in CQC?)

I'd have to swing Hard Ball's bat here...take the most bang that you can, as long as you can handle it so that it counts.

IS THIS NOT THE SAME ARGUMENT THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR WHAT 100 OR SO YEARS. IN THE OLD WEST SOME GUNMEN USED 38-40'S AND WHISPERED ABOUT HOW FAST THE KILLED. SOME USED .36'S, .38'S, 44-40'S OR .45 COLTS AND NEVER QUESTIONED THIER KILLING POWER. IN FACT IN ALL THE WRITTINGS I HAVE REVIEWED ALMOST NO REFFERENCE TO ANYTHING BUT PERSONAL PREFFERENCE TO CALIBER IS FOUND. I THINK THE MINDSET WAS THE GUNMAN AND HOW WELL HE COULD SHOOT. A HOLE IN THE GUT OR THE HEART OR THE LUNGS TOOK THE FIGHT OUT OF MOST GUYS. IF NOT YOU'D SHOOT THEM A COUPLE OF MORE TIMES. MOST USED A RIFLE WHEN THEY COULD.
ALL THIS 9MM, .40, .357, .45 IS BORN MORE OF IDEAS THAN REALITY. ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED CARTRIDGES IN THE BOILER ROOM AND YOUR DAY IS RUINED. MOST ELSE IS MENTAL MASTERBATION. AS SCROOGE SAID "THERE IS MORE OF GRAVY THAN OF GRAVE TO YOU."

SHOOT WHAT YOU CAN SHOOT DAMN WELL. SHOOT IT OFTEN AND ALWAYS HAVE IT CLOSE AT HAND.

The man that can keep his head and aims carefully when the situation has gone bad and lead is flying usually wins the fight.
