You might have heard this tip before, and it is a good one, but for those that haven't heard...
Learn to whistle loud without using fingers. I never could do it before, but one time while I was unemployed, I decided to give it a try. It took me several days of practicing (a minute or two, on and off during the day), but eventually it started to produce a whistle. Got better and better at it until I can let out a loud, crisp whistle without having to use a hand or fingers on the lips.
Here's where it applies to hunting.
When I'm in the field and a deer, elk, etc. come running or trotting through my area, I bring my rifle up and let out a loud whistle and they stop in their tracks to locate the sound. They give me a good shot and it has brought home meat every time I've tried it. Deer are not as smart as elk, I've had a deer start running because I took too long to take a shot, and was able to stop it again with another whistle.
Variations of this tactic are using a game call to stop them. If they are fleeing a threat as in running from another hunter, they might not stop, but a game call just might snap them out of their flight instinct. Deer will stop if you simply yell at them too. Hope it puts some meat in the freezer for you.
