Stoiger Cougar

I was a little leary when buying the gun but after researching it and taking it to the range.. I LOVE IT. I have the 9mm with 2 mage(what it comes with) and it shoots real damn accurate. I don't know if it is that rotating/locking barrel which does seem to be less recoil or the sheer weight of the gun. This use to be the beretta 8000 but then got sold. Seems to be real similar to the Beratta PX4 Storm. It's DA/SA plus you can fire a round without the mag in. Has an excellent safety that actually block the firing pin from the hammer. For $400 I put it up against just about anything on the market. My next purchase will probably be the 45ACP version:)

The Cougar you bought is a fine gun. I have owned one, plus two sizes of the Px4 which uses a slight refinement of that rotating barrel.

I notice the smooth recoil on those. I believe that it is smooth to the rear, without trying to lift the muzzle as much as others, due to the barrel not rapidly moving up and down.

I have noticed the same about the Beretta M92 series, since that locking design also doesn't have the barrel doing a high-speed vertical macarena as the slide cycles.

Oh, and the Cougar guns made in Turkey by Stoeger are actually real Berettas, in that Beretta owns Stoeger and merely shipped the tooling and plans to Turkey to be used there.

yes my beretta was one of my favorites also.. It was funny because I had gone to the GS to buy a Ruger SR9 and this was was laying right next to it so I picked it up and it was instant love with the fit to my hand.

I had the Stoeger Cougar (compact) - in fact my first 9mm pistol. Great pistol - very accurate, completely reliable. 2500 rounds and no failures of any kind. I probably would still have it, but I found it a bit heavy for carry.

I've got an 8040. It replaced the G22 I never did fully warm up to. I also wanted something with a safety.

Paid about $380 out the door with two mags.

It's a well made gun. Maybe a little rough around the edges but nothing major. Shoots great (as good as the operator).

Only problem is I tend to rest my thumbs on the side of the slide when shooting. This is the only pistol where the pressure kept it from cycling completely. I'm usually just touching it. Took a lot of time to get a new grip on it but it's getting to be second nature.

Enjoy yours. Mines been great.

All the Best,

I got my Beretta Cougar 8040d back in '94 when it was released. I carried it for a while as a duty weapon, but as I was accustomed, I got bored and went to another duty weapon, an H&K USP with a stainless slide. I don't remember any problems with it.

It was a really good gun, and there was no reason to change other than wanting to experience other makes and models. I sold it to my buddy who still carries it on duty after all these years. I'd buy it back if he'd sell it to.

Good luck with your Cougar!
