Stoeger O/U

I am thinking of purchasing a Stoeger O/U and I was wondering if any of you own and what you think of it.

I was recently in the market for a cheap O/U to start out shooting skeet with.... the Stoeger being one of the guns I was considering. After a quick search here, I decided that the neg comments far out-numbered the good on this shotgun.

I ended up buying a Remmington Spartan.... it turned out to be a very solid shotgun, and incredible quality despite its low pricetag (lower than the Stoeger as well) I would look into the Spartan line if you are looking for a cheap, well made O/U.

Just my .02 though.

PS... I just noticed that your in CT..... I am in the SE corner down on the coast near Groton/New London...... if your in the area, let me know and I can take you out to my gun club and let you try out my Spartan before you make a decision.

Stoeger Condor O/U

I purchased a Condor at the local Dick's Sporting Good store about 3 weeks ago on sale for $299.99. I had previously looked at the Spartan SPR 310 and the Yildiz model that is priced under $400 at Academy. I have to admit that the price of the Condor was probably my main reason for picking it, although the overall look and feel of the gun was acceptable to me. The gun is entirely unadorned, no metal scroll work, nothing but a basic gun (which I like). The wood used for the stock is advertised as being American walnut and that appears to be the case. The wood to metal fit is good, in my judgement, and the bluing is acceptable. Mechanically the gun works without complaint. It worked the first time I fired it and it has not failed to fire since. I have to tell you that I do not have a lot of experience with shotguns. This is my first O/U (although not my first shotgun). I am using the gun to (learn to) shoot skeet. So far I have not been disappointed, but then I have only shot this gun a 150 rounds or so. I am pleased (so far) with my purchase.

I would also mention that some purchasers of this gun have had problems mainly with the inertial mechanism that resets the trigger allowing the second barrel to fire. The first barrel fires but pulling the trigger a second time does not fire the gun. I have a friend who purchased the same model in 20 gauge at the same time as I purchased my 12 gauge who experienced this problem. This has been discussed on the Stoeger discussion group:

I have not experienced this with my shotgun.

I did make a change in the safety mechanism on my gun as described by several on the forum. I disabled the auto safety feature. You can still manually put on the safety. This is not a difficult thing to do if you own a Dremel or similar type device. It takes about 5 minutes. I also replaced the two chokes that came with the gun with skeet chokes (it uses Winchoke, Browning Invecta, Mossberg type) with Hastings chokes ($16 ea).

I am of the opinion that a low priced O/U like the Condor is quite appropriate for my purposes. So far I have not been disappointed, stay tuned. I hope it will do until I can save up for that Krieghoff I really deserve.
