I stumbled across a Stoeger Cougar Compact for about $340 after shipping and transfer fees. I've seen that academy had the non-compact model for $299 + tax, which would end up being around $325, but that's assuming I could find one in stock.
I spent more on mine and am very glad I bought it. It is a great gun with equal pulls (DA/SA) to the Beretta 92s, which I think are very good. The grip size may be a bit too round for some folks but you have already checked that.
(edited to remove a mistake)
The ones made in Turkey seem just as good as the ones made in Italy. The Stoegers are made in Turkey, by a Beretta owned company.
I think you got a good price. I do not own a compact Cougar, but I own three different Cougars in three different calibers.
1. Made in USA Beretta mini-Cougar 8000D DAO 9mm Para. The "minis" have a shorter grip and magazine length than the compact. Thus far, Stoeger has not manufactured a "mini" to my knowledge.
2. Made in Italy Beretta mini-Cougar 8040F .40 cal S&W. This is the F type which has a slide-mounted safety/decocker and is familiar to owners of the Beretta M9/92FS.
3. Stoeger Cougar 8045F .45 ACP.
All of my Cougars are soft-shooting. I have not noted any difference in build quality or fit between the American-made or the Italian-made Berettas, or the Turkish-made Stoeger.
Yup, I just went ahead and grabbed one! All of the reviews have been fantastic for it, and the rotary barrel system sounds interesting/fun. For the price, it seems like an absolute steal. Depending on the cost of the transfer, I may be getting it at around $330, but definitely no more than $345!
Yeah great deal. I paid $330 for a filthy used 8000 FT 9mm produced in Turkey. It cleaned up nicely after about 2 hours of effort, and looks nearly as-new now.
Fine workmanship and a very solid shooter. They're a real bargain.
Awesome! I'll take a NIB gun that is already considered a pretty good deal for the price of a used one any day.
If anyone else is interested, there were a few more available on Gunbroker. I believe there are a couple of the standard sized .40 cals for the same price. Just search for Stoeger Cougar and they're the ones listed for $299.99. Only $10 shipping too!
Academy Sports has been selling the Stoeger Cougar 8000F for $299 NIB as well. If I didn't already own three Cougars (2 Berettas and 1 Stoeger) I would have bought one by now. I have recommended this pistol to a number of people looking for a relatively full-sized 9mm TDA pistol.
This is really just an amazing deal. A budget price for a pistol of really high-quality design and construction. Cougars are very comfortable to shoot and are highly accurate.
Glad you bought it.I have had no complaints with mine after 3+ years and a bunch of rounds. FWIW it will fit in a Blackhawk Sherpa designed for a SA XDm.
You guys really make me MAD!
I'm not going to tell you what I paid for my Beretta 8000 over 15 years ago.
Not because it would make you mad but some one might get hurt from laughing so hard.
Its one of my favorite guns. Just get rid of the plastic grips and get a good set of Hogue Coco Bolo checkered and it makes the gun beautiful. And fits the hand better and more secure. http://www.hogueinc.com/store/products/beretta-cougar-8000-coco-bolo-checkered/435
Had the Compact, in 9mm, for several years..... something like 3000 rounds. Never a malfunction, very accurate. Good cast bullet shooter. A bit on the heavy side, though....which is why I got rid of it. (Wanted a lighter carry pistol.)
