Stocking Up 9mm: What FMJ?

I'm planning to stock up on 9mm FMJ for possible shortages. I'd like to get at least 1000 rounds put away. I'm looking primarily for practice ammo; but, if necessary, I would use it for SD.

What FMJ loads would you recommend? 115gr? 124gr NATO? 147gr?

Why use FMJ for SD?? Over penetration is a very real problem and any FMJ 9MM is a fairly poor man stopper compared to current top SD rounds like Federal HST or Speer God Dots.

Sure a lot of people have died being shot with 9MM FMJ but you want to stop an attacker ASAP. Your attacker may ultimately die from wounds from 9MM FMJ but very well may live long enough to kill you first.

I have a lot of FMJ for practice and a lot less HP for SD but plenty for my needs.

As far as FMJ I like Speer Lawman, Brass Blazer, PMC, and Federal American Eagle in 115, 124, or 147 GR.

If I HAD to rely on FMJ for SD it would be .45.

FMJs are unnecessary, and I wouldn't be using them for SD. (I may live in a brick house on a larger-than-average lot, but it's still in a subdivision and I don't care to wound one of my neighbors.)

For practice and 'emergency SD'...
Find a good cast bullet load, or start reloading and put it together yourself.

FMJ

The 9mm FMJ load is heavily condemned for its lack of stopping power and penetrative qualities, as noted by others.

But the OP appears to be simply inquiring about which bullet weight in FMJ might be recommended primarily for practice, with a slight aside regards SD.

For an FMJ practice bullet weight, I am a fan of 115 gr, for the simple reason that it seems the most plentiful and usually available at the best prices.

I can tell you I do exactly as the OP want's to do.

I Keep a large stock of FMJ ammo, I generally have 124 grain (9mm Nato) and 147 grain, I have a couple thousand rounds of each stored, I reload 9mm ammo extensively, so my stockpile of commercial rounds are packed for long term storage.

I personally don't shoot any 115 grain ammo out of any of my 9's so I don't buy, load, or keep any of it around.

[QUOTEl'd say NATO, 124 gr and having an ME (muzzle energy) of about 400. ][/QUOTE]

I have a bunch of that, good round. Could do worse.

I would experiment with the different bullet weights until I found a fmj and a hp round that is the most accurate in my weapon. That is what I would buy.

"...Why you suggesting this?..." Because there's no point in practicing with target loads then using hot HP's thinking it's the same. It's not.
Like Spats says, if you think there are shortages coming, stock up on the ammo you use for carrying. Not target ammo.

For the price of 1000 rounds, you can buy a Lee Pro1000 set up for 9mm and all the components to load 1000 rounds.

While I keep a few boxes of factory ammo around, reloads are a lot less expensive, allow you to shoot more if you want and in reality, to keep a larger stock of ammo than you would otherwise be able to.

I prefer Winchester White Box. Of the White Box varieties, I've tried the 115's, 124's, and 124 NATO's. The NATO's are hot. All of them run well in my two 9mm's (Kahr CW9; & Beretta 92fs). But my preference are the standard 124's.

I have also shot a lot of Remington's "bulk pack" (1000) 115's. I qualified for my CCW with them; so yes, they're reliable too.

When I carry 9mm, it's usually loaded with 124 gr +P Speer Gold Dots. When I order 9mm online, I like to get ammo loaded with 124 gr bullets and prefer "warm" loads to closer approximate my +P carry ammo. Nato spec 9mm is pretty close. Recoil and point of bullet impact are similar to my carry ammo.

I do admit to buying just about anything when I buy local, especially at times when ammo is hard to find.

Any 9mm FMJ there are a lot of stories of over penetration etc but little real world examples it being an issue. You are allowed FMJ only here for self defence so the authorities must not be concerned by possible over penetration, and they have plenty of experience on the subject here. And if you are looking it mostly for practice why use expensive expanding ammo.

The killers of the SAS used Sten Gun/Sub Gun ammo, they did all right.

Whether Catholic, or Orange, the above is true, supporting them or not, they were efficient.

Just recently I have used NATO 124g 9mm as my spare mag load out. No reason, may be leaking from two holes is not to bad.
