Stocking Stuffers for new Black Rifle?

I have a RRA CAR A2 coming for Christmas. (Thanks, Bigbore!) I'm totally new to ARs, and would love some advice about optics, cleaning, books, ammo, and other ways to drain the wallet. (As if 1911s didn't punch a big enough hole in the checkbook.) Thanks for the guidance. Gary

Check out my post on page #5 at the AR vs. AK thread. That will give you a good idea on how to blow money.

Then best/cheapest place to blow the wad is on Ebay. They have all kinds of stuff that you will ever/never need for your new found love.

get the important stuff

If you like to clean, clean it right. That means a Dewey rod, jags, guide and brushes. Don't forget the nylon toothbrush thing too!

A good sling is a must and it follows that I would recommend a free float tube. Accuracy Speaks has one for the carbines that retains stock guards (they must be modified).

Unless you are going to be using it for serious engagements in tactical situations, get a better sight system. I recommend a 0.052-0.065" front sight post with a 0.046/0.052 rear apeture.

A Sinclair Intl catalog to see all the good cleaning supplies. Second vote for a sling, and a GG&G catalog for all the goodies that you can put on (rails, sights, sling things, etc.).

How could you guys forget to mention magazines? 20 rounders are best for bench shooting and prone use, but 30 rounders are cheaper. Only buy USGI ones.

AR stocking stuffer? A Harris #5 Adapter is a nice got-to-have, and it's only $7 or so. Essentially it's just a swivel stud that attaches discretely to the handguard so you can use a Harris bipod with your AR. Of course then you're obligated to go out and spend $50 on a Harris bipod, but there's none better and it'll work with just about any rifle. -- Kernel

I'm surprised no one mentioned...

An AK so you will be able to shoot!:D Why everyone knows the AR will fire once and then jam from all that carbon the gas tube funnels back to the chamber. LOL!

(sarcastic mode off)

Get Zediker's and/or Feamster's books. Excellent source of info and how to use these rifles.

My vote is for optics. I just installed this setup on mine and really like it. It made a huge difference in my accuracy. Happy Holidays, Mike...

If you REALLY want a good stocking stuffer, buy yourself a good trigger. It will make a HUGE difference. If you doubt me, think about how really bad triggers feel on handguns and how much of a difference a well-tuned trigger makes. I got a single-stage trigger from Accuracy Speaks and it is great (although a little difficult to install). Do a search here and on AR-15.com to find some of the better triggers.

New Handguards

I think you'll want to replace the stock handguards.

You can go with a free-float tube if you are concerned about the minor deviations in accuracy from sling pressure.

You can go with the KAC RAS or RIS systems if you want the high-speed M4 look-alike and the ability to hang more accessories than you could afford off the front.

At a minimum, upgrade to the M4 handguards - the double-heat shields are a worthwhile investment if you ever plan to shoot more than 100 rounds in a session without gloves.
