Hello!

I slipped when I tightened one of the stock screws and got this scratch. Is there anything I can do to repair it?

I can't tell from the pic if any grains were cut- but, for a start, I would take a damp flour sack type cloth or a damp cloth diaper type cloth, lay it over the offending scratch, and go over it with your regular old clothes iron set to high. The steam does wonders to raise dents and such. It's not always 100%- but it's the best idea I got going. Good luck.

don't let the missus see you run the iron- might giver her ideas if she thinks you know how to run one.:p

I've used the steam / iron method suggested by 10-96 to remove dents in furniture with moderate success. May have to touch up the finish but there should be at least some improvement.

I certainly hope I'm wrong but do not think you are going to be able to do an easy fix in this area, just to deep and grain is cut.
I often use the steam process and have more success with bare wood. Never on a scratch like this but on dents. Try the previous suggestions as do not think you can do any harm. I don't know your project or the condition of the rest of the stock and perhaps it's something you can live with. I certainly wish you much success. In hind-sight, on screws like this, I always protect the wood with masking or electrical tape.

+1 on 'lectrical tape. Also, you ARE using hollow ground gunsmith kit type screwdrivers... aren't you? Some folks just don't realize how far a proper fitting screwdriver will prevent boogering heads and slipping.

Thank you all for the replies and hints, I appreciate it!

I might try the steam-trick.

The rest of the stock is in mint condition.

It was actually a torx-screw so I only have myself to blame working in a dark place with the piece vertical.

I will take wisdom from Pahoo and 10-96 and use tape in the future.
