Stock fit on a Winchester Model 94

Hi All, I just bought this gun and I just want to know how tight a stock should fit around the tang. Under the part of the tang that has the hammer directly above it, I can see a thin layer of light through it to the other side. I can fit my fingernail just into that curved area behind the hammer, where the curved part at the start of the tang meets the wood. And, the tang tip is also seated down into the wood a bit too deep, (about 1/32"deep), at the end of the tang tip. This is a late 1940's mfg'd date and the stock looks like it matches the wear of the bluing of barrel and receiver, except maybe a bit too good for this year. So I suspect maybe it's been replaced and and therefore maybe why the fit seems not right. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wood over time expands and contracts. It is possible that over time it has done that. It may have been replaced or just refinished at some time too. Photos would help.
