STI's Trojan

I was looking at .45's at my local gunstore yesterday (Kimber, Colt, Springfield, 1 Les Baer $$) and on the lowest shelf, toward the back, I found that they carry STI (and had a Trojan)! Upon examining this pistol I must say I LOVE IT! The fit and finish was wonderful. And the price seemed pretty reasonable at a little over $900.

Does anyone have an STI? Any trouble (reliablity, accuracy, broken parts, etc.)? How is customer service? Any info would be appreciated before I drop my $$ down for this pistol. Thanks in advance!

They are excellent guns. Factory guns that are hand fit like a custom. You can't go wrong with a STI.

I have several STIs and right now they are my brand of choice. I had one or two minor issues that involved their customer service and I found it to be as good as or better than any I've delt with in the firearms industry.

Personally, I think the STI Trojan is the best kept secret in the industry. It's a much better gun than a Kimber (and I have two - both are good guns) in terms of fit, finish, and quality of materials and the price is below some of the top end Kimbers.

I think my Trojan is the only gun I own that never had at least one FTF in the first 50 or 100 rounds. The gun has been totally reliable from the time I opened the box.

STI is kind of a unique company, factory made but high end yet not quite a true custom.

GASP!

Wow! This looks like a helluva pistol!!!

Has anyone tried this .40 Super cartridge? If you can really just do a barrel and spring swap to have .45 ACP, this looks like a winner!!

I have about 15000 rounds through my Trojan. Right now I am having a .40SW 6" top end built up for it. I also own a Para Ord 1911 and have shot some Kimbers and SA guns. In my opinion, Kimber, SA, Para, Colt and the like are all "off the rack" quality and STI is the next level up (close to hand made). The fit, finish, and trigger of STI are better and it only takes about 2 seconds to feel it. IMO, most 1911's are overpriced for what you get, the STI gives you more than you pay for by comparison. BTW: $900 is a good price for a new Trojan. I paid $875 for mine two years ago.

Is the standard Trojan a modular, normal-spec 1911? I thought they might have slightly thinner bodies, making them not quite as easily modified.

Shmackey,

I think its just the slim grip that gives it the rep of a smaller frame.
If you go to their website above I beleive somewhere it says that its just a standard 1911 type. Also there's a link to a review of the 9mm Trojan from Massad and it gives the details on the Trojan. It does say there is grip work because material is cut from under the trigger gaurd to make for a higher grip.

I read the article but I'm still confused. When they say the grip is smaller, do they mean the actual width of the frame? Or just the wood? Is the slide a standard width?

I think these look like a great deal *if* you can work on them like any 1911.

I for one kept grabbing a couple of STI's off the display and going "wow, what a fit".

Besides the general STI fantastic quality, weigth distribution, etc., in my opinion yes, it is the deceptively full yet somewhat thinner grip that gives it an edge.

Definitely on my list.

Hello. The STI Trojan is one of my favorite handguns. This one's the long-slided version in 9mm. It flat out "shoots" and is utterly reliable. I did replace the grip screw bushings and went with standard thickness stocks, but apparently alot of folks like the thinner stocks as they come that way.

Best.

my female friend saw the picture in the ads and wanted to know more about it(trojan) seems to be a good value according to you all , hows the vip stand up in comparision and price as she saw that one too .she will be buying a gun in the next year or so .

i too have an STI Trojan. it has a chromed frame and a blued slide. i use it for IDPA, IPSC and carry. except for some problems with the magazine catch, which i ended up replacing, i've haven't had any problems with it.

The wood grips are thinner. The frame is a standard 1911 frame as is the slide and all other parts. The Trojan is available with standard thickness grips for the same price.

I was in OKC last week and stopped by Outdoor America. First time in that store in 10 years. I even got to catch up with Fred Baker, though I usually get to see him at the SHOT Show every year. He has the Trojan for about $850 at retail, I am sure it would be closer to $800 from his wholesale side at FBF Inc.
