Still on my quest...help me decide

I have been stuck in a quandry for a while now. Been trying to decide on a carry gun. I want something small...in 9mm or 45acp (that much I have decided on, at least!)
I have narrowed my choices, but new ones just pop up. The new contender in the group is the Beretta 9000s in 9mm. What is the consensus on this gun? I haven't had a chance to hold one yet, but the idea of using my 92 hi-caps in it intrigues me
If not that...maybe a G26, 36? HEPP ME!! HEPP ME!!

Kermit I have carried a 9mm for years and never felt "undergunned" ... I think the Beretta 9000 would make a very good carry piece and like you said it also uses the high cap mags.

Which One ?

Kermit, I would scratch the 9000 from my list. I love Berettas and own several in the Cougar series. IMHO the 9000 is a real stinker.
The gun shop I frequent had gotten three of them in for customers and I played with one and it didn't work for me, Didn't fit the hand right, Controls were not at the right places and very hard to operate. I thought I was going to like this one and no way now could you even give me one. Out of the three that were delivered, all three were returned and then returned to the wholesaler.
Take a look at the Cougar Compact series, You might find that one to be a lot better.
If not go with the Glock, I've got a 27 and love it ;)

Just my thoughts on the subject, Hope it helps :)

Even though I carry a G30..it is not what I consider small. Nor is the G36. But then if you want to shoot a big bullet..you have to step up to a bigger gun.:D

As for 9mm...the G26 is hard to beat as well as the Kahr Mk9 or K9 Covert. What makes them easy to conceal is that they have a relatively small grip section.

High Cap mags are a neat idea, but they just throw the natural balance of the weapon off too much for me. Some are also sensitive to any pressure on the mags while firing. I just prefer to stick to standard mags with a quick reload when necessary. If you can't handle the problem with 6 to 10 rounds..you probably need a bigger gun.

Good shooting

Have you considered the Sig p228. It's a compact 9mm. The army even issues it as the M11. Very dependable top notch gun.

Another one to consider is the HK P7, which is smaller than the Sig p228, but it's not a Sig :)

Kermit,

I hate to say it, but I have to agree with loknload on the Beretta 9000. As much as like the Berettas, there is no way I could like the 9000. I didn't shoot the one I looked at, so I can't really give you a good evaluation, but for me the ergonomics and feel are terrible. I couldn't even get a decent grip on the slide to rack it.

I have spoken to several people who like them, but they aren't for me.

I would still take a look at them before making up your mind. I did try a 92 magazine in the one I looked at and it fit and functioned fine (remember I didn't shoot the thing).

Thanks for the responses :) Really a big help. Let me add a little more fuel to my smoldering fire...
1. Rule out Sig. Had a 220 for 5 months. 3 of those months it spent w/ Sig on a warranty repair. Still not right. Sold it...no more Sig for me.
2. In contention as of today...Glock 26, 36, 30; Beretta 9000s 9mm; something from Kahr in 9mm; Ti 5-shot 38/357
3. I really like HK's, have a couple of USP's and P7's in safe. They just don't make anything small enough or light enough.
Hope this helps narrow things down

Here is what I would recommend you trying:

Sig Sauer P239
Glock 26, Glock 30
CZ 75 Compact

Edit: Oops, too late...I just noticed that you don't want a Sig. Scratch the Sig off your list (though I think that one bad experience with Sig you had was a fluke).

You hit on the only positive point that I could see on a 9000 and that is the ability to use the 92 mags. Other options are: G26, G36, Kahr MK9, P9 Covert, or MP9 early next year, SIG P238, P225, and P245. There are others that are out there, but these are the smaller of the currently produced models.

I agree, avoid the Beretta 9000. The ergonomics suck and the trigger on the one I handled was HORRIBLE. For a concealable 9mm I'd suggest (based on the ones I've played with):

Single stack:

Kahr K9/P9 (P9 is lighter but K9 is nicer to shoot)
Sig P239 (Excellent quality but funny "feel")

Double stack:
CZ-75 PCR (very nice feel and trigger)
Glock 26 (um, shot it, it was good :D )
SigSauer P228 (a bit on the bulkier side)

If I was going to get a "hideable" 9mm I'd go with either the Kahr K9 or CZ-75 PCR.

What about H&K or Beretta Cougar?

:D
Hey Kermit,
You mentioned you have a H&K USP. Is it a compact model? I have a .45 and a Beretta Cougar 8040. I absolutely love the H&K Compact, and it is my primary carry weapon. I recently purchased the Beretta Cougar and have run about 700 rounds through it without a hiccup. I find the rotating barrel takes most of the recoil away, to the point of feeling like I am shooting a 9mm. If size is still an issue with these 2 suggestions, how about the Beretta Cougar 8040 mini? Even smaller grip with the already short slide.
Just my 2 cents, Good luck!
