Still looking for a .357 revolver

Still looking around for a .357 revolver. Currently I am seeing a new Ruger 3" SP 101 for about 500 and a used older S&W 6" 586 in excellent condition. Any thoughts?
 
Smith, Ruger and Taurus all have some good ones to choose from.

If by chance, you're interested in single action, I highly recommend the Blackhawk.
 
For target shooting, hunting, or just because they are getting harder to find: 6" 586 hands down.

CCW: SP101
 
Two totally different guns

The ruger is a ccw or nightstand weapon where the 586 is a serious large frame target/service weapon.
 
What's it for?
If you don't need to CCW, the 586 is one heck of a revolver.

I would only buy a SP101 for CCW because I'm a recoil wimp.
 
When folks ask "What's it for?" they are asking what the op plans to do with the gun. What role does he want the gun to play? What does he want to do with it. If he looks at it that way he can rule out some guns right off. But if he ain't sure then they all look pretty.

PatientWolf, in digging through some of your older posts, your affinity for 1911's is pretty clear. I am assuming this is a nightstand/collection gun.

I also think S&W's are better made revolvers overall. Ruger's last forever, but Smith's tend to be more refined. I say get the Smith.

The S&W just seems very smooth and I don't know if the Ruger would smooth out. (Just open the cylinder and spin it-the S&W cylinders spin like they are on ball bearings, as an example).

JimmyR. I do like 1911s, but thought a .357 would be a nice additional cartridge (2 if you count .38special). A Coonan is out of my price range so a revolver and eventually a lever are what I was thinking for the .357.
 
You really can't go wrong with either a Ruger GP or the S&W 586.

If it were me, I'd jump on the 586 if its in good shape but by the one you like best.

Get the S&W.
 
I would also get the Smith for your purposes. I would only get the Ruger for carry because of the three inch barrel.
 
HI Ya, My S & W model19 is excellent; there are probably still many for sale relatively cheap as they were the go to gun for Cops in the '60-70's.
 
I have two, both 7-shot models ... a 4inch Smith 686+ for fun and a Taurus 617 as part of my home-defense plan ... the Taurus needed a touch of 'smithing, the Smith has been perfect from day one ...
 
If it's mostly for range/target use and primarily going to see .357 mag rounds, get an N frame Smith. I love my M28-2. It soaks up the recoil from the hot .357 loads and makes the .38 spl's feel like powderpuffs. You'll never have to worry about forcing cone issues with the N frame either. Plus, it's a classic P&R S&W.
