STI?

I'm looking for information on STI firearms, makers of 1911 custom clones and race guns.
I've just seen their TROJAN model, and it appears to be fit by a master machinist.
They're just over $1000.00 a copy, so I thought I'd solicit experienced opinions before I bought.

I don't know about the Trojan but I own two Eagle 5.l's. Out of all the semi-automatic pistols I own which is a bunch the STI is the best I have ever come across. The reason I own two (both in .38 Super) is because when I find something I really like it is soon to be discontinued so if I really like a gun I buy two of them. If I wanted a Trojan I would buy it without reservation from this company. The only problem I have ever had with my pistols are that the slide fails to lock back on the last shot. I have never tried to have the problem corrected but since these are hi-capacity models if I can't get the job done with 18 rounds another magazine probably won't help me.

www.stiguns.com - sti-guns.com is their old addy.

My experience with STI has been with their 2011 HiCap frames. Had several built into supernice raceguns. STI is known for very high quality across their entire product line and I doubt their Trojan would be any different. My only concern with this pistol would be the STIppled front strap. I've never handled one with this and have no idea if I would like it or not. My only experience is with checkering. If you like the way it feels I'd say buy it!

Go to www.1911forum.com and check the STI/SVI forum for more info.

Great guns at a great price. Their single stack carry guns are the thinnest all metal carry pistols out there. Pistols machined CNC and hand fit and tested before leaving the factory. You can pay a lot more and get a lot less.

I have one of their LS-9 1911 cut down 9mms. The fit is pretty good on this one. I have been a little concerned on some of the soft metal used in some of the parts on this gun. The plunger tube was so soft it came unsteaked. It totaly fell apart while it was being removed. Replaced with a Colt part and all was well. Service from these guys has been pretty good. I first had a LS-40 in this gun. They completely rebuilt that one for me. It just never did run true as I had the same last shot lock back problems as has been mentioned above. The 9mm version however, has beeb pretty reliable.

These guys are WELL known in the race gun world. They are a major player in IPSC. They have just recently introduced the Trojan. So it doesn't have any kind of track record yet. I would not expect a lemon from them. If you have a problem, they will take care of it. They have invited me out to their factory several times to look around. They are only about 15 miles north of me.

It appears from thier web site the Trojan is the only gun they are making in .45 that does not have a bull barrel. This may not be a big deal for most folks. But a full size gun with a bull barrel is a big no no in IDPA. Under 4" is ok, but not in 5. I was looking at the Trojan in 9x19 or 40 S&W. But those are only available in a bull barrel.

That new Ranger scares me a little. It LOOKS like they are trying to build that LS-40 out to 45 ACP. They never got the LS-40 running reliably due to the recoil of that round. I would be suspect of the .45 ACP. Maybe they did. But I would sure want to shoot one of them before putting down a grand. And it is only 6+1 where the cut down Kimbers are 7+1. This looks like a propritary mag to me.

The STIppled strap is actually quite nice. I like it a lot better than the standard 20 lpi checkering I got on my Lightweight Commander 38 Super. It really doesn't cut into you like a lot of checkering can.

The LS and BLS are not the same gun as a Trojan. They sell every Trojan that they make and they can't make them fast enough. One of the best mass produced 1911's on the market, does not have the same customization done to them that you find on a Rock River Arms gun, but then again it doesn't cost as much either.
