STI Trojan VS Colt Gold Cup 1911 Pistols

Best question on here in a while. While agree with the gentleman above. Whew, STI is doing some good stuff. I live in Austin and they are 20 minutes north and they are in every store here. I shot one at the range, and I liked it a lot! I am a Colt till I die type of guy. If Colt does not stir your loins, go STI. But some of us always want that rampant horse on our guns. Buy both? :D

I've looked at the STI Trojan and consider it a nice 1911. The last 1911 I bought, however, was a Gold Cup. I guess that says it for me.

My Gold Cup was made in the 70’s and THE best gun I have in the safe. The new gold cups are not nearly as nice and tight. Having read about the STI but never seen I can’t really comment but it would take a really nice gun to get me to trade then I probably wouldn’t do it without a couple of thousand different (to me;)).
Prancing pony!

I agree with other posters that both guns are good. My personal experience has been part breakage on three different Colts and zero problems with my STI Trojan.

The above Youtube video shows me shooting my .40 STI Trojan off-hand at a 1" diameter Shoot'n'see repair dot at a distance of 25 yards.

buying a name or a gun

If you want a Colt because it says Colt buy one.

Do not buy it if you cannot read what it says on its side whilst shooting.
Buy that STI because it will more likely be a better gun (or for a bit more, a Les Baer).

Secretariat, I have owned several Gold Cups since the '70s, and within the last year have acquired two Trojans, though my STIs are in 9MM and .38 Super. The Gold Cups have been one of my favorite Colts for a long time and I currently have a Gold Cup trophy. I am drawn to the Colt name as much as most shooters and prefer the looks of the Colt. I am a fan of the Colts, but my experience is that they are not automatically better than others simply because they are Colts. The STI Trojans have impressed me with their excellent build quality and customer service. Both a notch above Colt, IMHO. In short, both good guns, not perfect, but you likely can't go wrong with either of these two...ymmv

Hi, a new guy here, but one thing to consider in your decision is that the Colt, IIRC has a forged frame while the STI has a cast frame. I've owned a Colt Gold Cup, and both an STI Edge and Trojan (both .40 S&W) as well as a loaded Springfield and a couple of Rock Islands. I currently shoot Kimbers. The point is not to impress you with the guns I've owned, but just to say that I found all of them to be worth consideration. Were I back in the market for a 1911 it would be a Kimber or one of the forged STIs.

Shot a couple Colts, shot a couple STI's. Personally, I like the STI's, and I'm partial to Springfield Armory's stuff too.

I've seen an STI 2011 fire a double charged .40, resulting in the casing being blown apart in the chamber. My friend looked into the chamber and sees the remains of the casing, disassembles the pistol, knocks the casing loose, and inspects the gun. There wasn't a single scratch on it. Nothing. Loads a mag of two rounds and test fires it; not an issue. He proceeded to go on shooting the rest of the afternoon with it. He did a detailed tear down to check and clean everything at home and found nothing wrong with the pistol. Pretty good in my book.

The STI might shoot a little tighter groups than a Goldcup but you'll need a Ransom rest and calipers to tell;)
I own a STI VIP and a Goldcup no way to make a mistake with this choice.

i owned a gold cup and still own a spartan v. if they trojan makes improvements worthy of the price increase over the spartan, it has to be an amazing weapon. that spartan is insanely accurate. the gold cup is a classic design, and very beautiful. plenty accurate as well. strangely, of the 5 1911's i've owned, i've sold both colts and a kimber, leaving me only the custom build and the sti. nothing wrong with the gold cup, just thought i'd mention it.

For a classic 1911, I'd go with the Colt Gold Cup. For something a little more tricked out, I like STI; more particularly the STI 2011 series guns. So, short answer is: Both.

STI. I grew up when Colt revolvers were great but Colt 1911s were garbage and needed throat work, barrel polishing, and other work just to function reliably.

Both are great guns, but I'd pick the Colt.

The 1911s Colt are putting out these days are some of their best pistols ever.

How much money you got? Dollars to dollars....

They may be some of their best, but they nowhere match (or even come close to) what else is best.

The STI guns are very tempting but I just ordered a Colt Wiley Clapp Commander. It took me a while to decide.

I have a lot of 1911's .....but I don't own an STI or a Colt....so I don't have a bias in that regard...

I think both companies are making pretty good guns for the money these days....but I'm more impressed with what I see coming out of Colt lately - with their new machinery --- they just seem a little "cleaner" - in terms of fit and finish - and with better triggers - than what I see from the STI offerings I've been able to fondle at shops in my area.
