sti 1911 trojan problems

hello to all gunsmiths.

well, just got my 1911 trojan in 9mm

i had it converted to .38super

the sear and hammer engagement were not messed with by my gunsmith.

i went to the range to break and sight it in. i fired about 125 rounds, then the gun went full auto!

i was shooting a power factor of only 155 with 147gr fmj bullets.

i took it to my gunsmith at his house. he put the hammer and sear on a trigger block (test engagement surfaces). they were so out of engagement that only one side of the sear was contacting the hammer!
my smith corrected it (he is very good) and we went right out to the range again as the sun was going down. i got through about three mags and it went full auto again!

we looked at the so called "tool steel" hammer and sear that sti says comes with the gun. the sear is definitely a cast part. you can see the porosity on both sides of the sear. the disconnector is also very obviously and poorly a cast part.
i gave my gunsmith my gun last night and he is going to throw in some quality parts and he is going to go to work on it. his worry is that sti might have drilled the sear and hammer frame holes out of spec. i am in a tough spot as i need this gun for some matches this week and weekend so i leave it in the hands of my trusted gunsmith instead of gambling on whoever is doing work at sti.

any other ideas out there?

You better have him put in a quality hammer as well. If the trigger pull is not quite up to your standards, let it go until after the match, then have your smith work on it. I am not familiar with a Trojan (pistol, that is) and have no idea of the quality. If all that was done was to convert the gun to .38 Super, the internal parts should not have been messed with at all, so it is likely they were the original.

Fedaykin, you or your smith can check engagement by mounting the sear and hammer on their pins outside the pistol on the left side of the frame. I'd also ask him about installing oversize sear and hammer pins. The frame holes as well as the holes in the parts are reamed to the exact same size. With the new pins installed this removes any wobble and keeps everything uniform. George

full auto sti

thanks people. i went to my gunsmith and he went over the pistol. found that the gun came with a very weak hammer spring that had one, or more coils cut off. cheap way to a better feeling trigger i am told. he put in a 19lb wolff hammer spring.
the sear pin was also out of round and that was why the sear was contacting the hammer on one hook. he replaced that and corrected the engagment surfaces.
the sear spring was bad as well. he replaced it. he checked for function by doing the slide drop/hammer follow test.
i went right to the range and put over three hundred rounds through. i would have done more, but i was supposed to be at work :). no problems at all.

my gunsmith is a god.
