Well, I had a chance to shoot the Glock .40 which I thought I was just about ready to buy. I was very disappointed. It wasn't that accurate, it was way hot in my hands, and ripped the mag release ripped a hole in my hand!!!

So time to go back on the gun hunt... So I was looking at the Steyr's, looks like more glock than a glock!! So I was wondering if they are going to come out with a M45 in the .45 ACP caliber. Also, I assume you can buy the M357 barrel as a drop in replacement for the M40?

Thanks in advance,
Albert

The M45 was the original M pistol, but for marketing purposes Steyr offered it in 9mm and .40 first. The S series has just been released. Expect the M45 to be announced within a year. Neat thing about it is that it might use 1911 mags.

Wild Bill, I think you are correct. I thought the Steyr is developed around the .40 as well. That's OK, as long as it's not backwards like the Glock, which is designed around the 9mm, and they attempted to get to the market first by introducing the .40 as a slightly beefed up 9mm, which it is not...
That's why when the .357Sig came out, they had to do a lot to beef up the gun so it's 357Sig ready. I want over engineering, not modifications to compensate...

Jeff, Any place I can read about the announcement?

The original was developed by Wilhelm Bubits in .45 ACP and used a 1911 mag. He retained the same external slide dimensions on the .40 and 9mm so that later development would be easier. The 9 and .40 were brought out first, as well as the S series, to be able to sell more guns. With our 10 round limit here they would not have sold as many M series if the .45 was introduced first. You bring out the big sellers first then use the slow down in production once sales start to wane to introduce a new model thereby spurring sales, but you don't introduce a pistol that once it is delvered nobody will by the next models out. Hence the oversized for 10 rounds, .40, then 9mm, then the S-series in .40 and 9mm, then the XS or M-45 (maybe together) lastly the L which will be a .45. I don't work for Steyr so they are going to do it there way, but this is the way I see it. Don't know if there will ever be an S-45.

A modern single-column .45? Be still my heart! One day Glock may come out with their model "37" to complement the model 36, but given how slow the 36 has been to come out, we'll all be using laser pistols by then.
