Does anyone know if the Steyr S-series pistols are available in the US? I have seen the full size M series at a gun show, but....

Steyr had their factory sold out from under them in Germany. It appears that a bank held the note or title to the land and sold it to BMW. Steyr also lost their US importer.

I have heard that Steyr is attempting to get their factory up and running in a new location and are searching for a new importer and failing that are thinking of becoming their own importer. I don't know if many of the S series made it to the states before the bottom fell out.:(

This is a shame as the Steyr M series were good guns and I was looking forward to seeing the S's.

There are some S9s in the US that made it here before Steyr started having problems, I've seen a couple for sale on Gunbroker (but that was a few months ago).

There are also some S40s in other parts of the world (there's a TFLer in South America who has one ... can't remember his name).

I love my M40 and would buy an S40 in a heart beat (well maybe not now that I have my Kahr MK40).

I picked up the S9 at a local gun show several months back. It is a shame that this gun is not more readily available. The S9 has become one of my favorite 9's and gets more range time than my Glock 19 or 26 do. Hopefully, Steyr will get production/importation issues resolved. No problem with reccomending one from my point of view.

For you guys that own one, how do you like the safety on these? Or do you even use it? Is it easy to use or does it get in the way? Would it be easy to accidently engage it under stress? This looks to be the only con to this pistol other than availability.

I own a M40, I don't use the safety. I find it a pain to engage and difficult to remember to disengage due to it's non typical location. It would be extremely unlikely to accidently engage as it requires two fingers to engage it, one won't do it I've tried. I don't worry about the safety on the gun owning a glock I'm used to not having one. The key lock (similar to Taurus') it totally disables the gun is the only safety feature I use. Definetly prefer this gun to the G27.

I don't use the manual safety since the Glock style "Safe Action" is pretty safe to carry, and I don't use the built in trigger lock on mine since I don't have kids.

The safety on my M40 is prettymuch impossible to engage by accident.

My concern with it is that if you disengage the safety under stress you might accidentaly pull the trigger when that may not have been your intention.

I snapped a couple of pictures showing how to engage and disengage the safety on my M40, they are attached below.

the safety on my m40 will occasionally engage while racking the slide during dry-firing. it hasn't happened while at the range, so i assume its only when there isnt a round in the chamber.

personally, i keep my m40 and m9 with the safety engaged. but thats for at home, as i haven't begun carrying yet. i think having a good holster would set my mind at ease and i wouldnt engage the safety while its concealed.

My Steyr M40 has been flawless so far. No jams, FTFs, hiccups, or anything! The low bore axis (5mm lower than Glock) and low-profile slide make recoil negligible, and the trigger is crisper than Glocks that I've shot.

The movement to drop the safety is completely different than pulling the trigger (up instead of back), so I don't think that it would be a problem. I'd prolly carry without the safety on anyway in a good holster. Takedown is a snap, and the external lock thingy is a nice touch if you have kids.

I'd definitely buy an S-series if I could find one. I've seen them listed for $650+ on gunbroker though! I bought my M40 for $349 w/ one mag, so the mark up doesn't seem right...

I've been carrying Glocks for well over ten years, so not using the safetly doesn't bother me one. I just wanted to make sure that it could not be accidentely engaged under stress. TIR has allieviated that fear..Thanks TIR! I like the fact that the Steyr has a smaller grip and bore axis than the Glocks. The Glock grips are just a little to large for my wife, and any help with reducing recoil for her is always welcome. OF course that's really just an excuse to buy another gun, My Kahr P9 and Walther P99 fit her nicely to.

There is a local gun store that has a Styer S9 for $489. I was real interested until I shot one and didn't like the sore thumb knuckle. If anyone wants more info on the S9 let me now and I will post the number.

CDNN in Abilne TX has new M40's for $349.99, and M9's for $389.99
They had S9's a few months ago for $499, and M series were $339.99 They must be getting low on them, so the price is going up.
