I am in the market for a 22lr handgun. I came across this hand gun for $200. I don't have much knowledge of handguns. Barely shoot my S&W Shield 9 and Bodyguard .380, but have started just recently. Only reason why I am asking about this handgun is my son has had an interest in shooting a 22lr handgun. My brother has one but its his not mine. Any help is welcomed. To be honest I have been trying to avoid having to spend up to $400 as I have seen S&W Shield 22lr for around the $360 if not mistaken. Thanks in advanced.

I also have the S&W M&P Compact .22. It is handy and reliable, zero malfunctions on Minimags. A couple hundred of those, and it was "broken in" and reliable on Aquila and Remington, too.

You are going to get a recommendation for every .22 pistol out there,,,

You are going to get a recommendation for every .22 pistol out there,,,
So I might as well add my 2-cents worth.

I recommend the Ruger SR-22,,,
It is Double Action/Single Action,,,
With external hammer and de-cocker.

I feel these features make for the most versatile firearm.

With striker fired or internal hammer pistols,,,
Once you chamber a round the gun is cocked,,,
You will have to rely solely on the manual safety.

There is no way to un-cock the pistol.

That's my only complaint about the S&W M&P Compact,,,
I have friends who own the S&W and it's a fine performing pistol.

I simply prefer the other type.

With the SR-22 you can chamber a round,,,
Then manually lower the hammer or use the de-cocker.

The DA action means to fire the now de-cocked pistol,,,
You simply pull the trigger which cocks and fires it.

You will have people who agree with me,,,
And you will hear from some who poo-poo my thoughts.

Just tossing this out there.

Oh, Kel Tec just announced a brand new .22 pistol,,,
The new Kel Tec P17 has a 16 round magazine capacity,,,
And it comes with three magazines which is absolutely unheard of.

The pistol has ambidextrous safety and mag release,,,
All for an advertised MSRP of $199.00.

This might be the entry level pistol you are looking for,,,
My only gripe is that it is either striker fired,,,
Or has an internal hammer.

Like I said before,,,
There's nothing wrong with this style of gun,,,
I just happen to prefer the other type like the Ruger SR-22.

Hope this helps.

aarondhgraham, thank you very much for the info.

I did find the ones mentioned. Did read the Kel Tec P17 not out yet. As well as I saw the Ruger SR-22 which I was for $319 from the site above given by railroader.

I am still learning so I have failed to acknowledge what is advantage/disadvantage from either style from what you already mentioned.

Out of curiousity, is having a threaded barrel good to have? Would be necessary if someone was planning on putting a suppressor right?

Yes the threaded barrel would be necessary for a suppressor.

I'm another fan of the S&W M&P 22 compact. The gun is incredibly reliable for a 22 and can be had for under $300. Since you already own a couple of S&Ws, the M&P would offer you some consistency.
