Steyr M9

My M9 has a polymer frame with a finger groove and a basic grip area. It feels almost slippery during recoil.
Is a tacky grip tape an option, or should I just get the grip stippled or checkered by a pro?

I finds Glocks are slippery too. Pachmayr makes what they call a 'grip glove' that isn't stupid expensive. Dunno if it'll fit your M9. Be worth a phone call or e-mail.

Tape will attract dirt and stick to everything. Having anything done by a smithy will be both expensive and take a long time. I'd be thinking that as a last resort.

If I were in your position, I would find someone who can stipple the frame, or someone with a laser engraver who can engrave a pattern or texture on the grips to increase grip. Since we are talking about a permanent change to the frame, look around before you hand over your pistol.
