Steyr M9 for action shooting?

I tried a Steyr M9 yesterday at a range that rents guns. Sights looked strange, but I was surprised how fast I found the front sight, it felt like faster than with my HK USPC9. Also, Steyr seemed to get rapidly back on target between shots, probably thanks to low barrel line. Felt reliable, but I just shot S&B FMJ.

Now I am considering if I should buy one. If I do, I will use it in one kind of action shooting (local militarized version of IPSC). Just wondering if M9 would work faster than my belowed USPC9. Anyone used Steyr (M9 or M40) in IPSC, IDPA or something similar?

P.S. Please dont suggest a Glock instead. I had a 19, wasn't 100 % reliable, and I shoot better with USPC than with a Glock. Also, here in Finland I get 14 rd mags for the Steyr so mag capacity is not a big issue.

I had a M9. While I liked its grip and low recoil and muzzle flip, I sold it because I was not satisfied with its reliability. Mostly, I was not convinced that GSI, Steyr's U.S. importer, could not stop it from tossing brass at my face. Another problem that I had, the failure of the slide to completely close, was also noted in Handguns' review of the Steyr M40 in the August 2000 issue.

Run a search and draw your own conclusions. The Steyr M9/M40 has been discussed several times.

Cawdor, I have followed topics on Steyr, but not very carefully. I had noticed criticism on throwing empty cases around, but not the lack of reliability. Since you have first hand experience of that, and also Handgun magazine writers have noticed the same, my interest on that gun went down. For me reliability is extremely important when I decide to buy a gun (or lack of it if I decide to get rid of a gun I own).

Ossi, I did a couple of posts about my gun. The slide failed to close twice in 1100 rounds (rounds 600-1100). I sent it to GSI for repair, and I mentioned that it was throwing brass in my face. It probably happened once in 100 rounds; however, this has never happened with any other gun that I've owned. After the gun came back from GSI, I started to have failures to eject. The case would clear the chamber, but not eject. This happened 8 times in 600 rounds - seven times with S&B and once with with Winchester USA. I had two stove pipes and three failures to eject in the first 300 rounds, though I attributed them to break in. The slide closure problem did not happen again, but the brass continued to come back at me. I liked the gun. It was hard to part with it. I could have sent in for repair again, but I did not think that GSI could stop it from throwing brass at me.

ossi, if you read pete's review, you can read about the brass in the face problem. Also, they've cut a bit more on the breech of the ejection port, so that no longer is a problem. Ask Pete, he's the definitive Steyr guy on the board.

I'm STILL waiting for the M357... Pete, refresh my memory again, what, Sept???
