Steyr M40 typical breaking-in problem ?

I recently received my M40.
Love that gun ,very accurate ; the first time on the range I could only shoot 30 rounds.I had one failure to go in full battery - the slide would not entirely close on a UMC 165gr.FMC round.
Has this something to do with case wall thickness of the UMC round , is it a chamber dimension problem or does the piece needs a breaking -in period ?
Someone had the same "stoppage" with the M40 ?

Bill, do a search here for M40 threads and you'll find this point discussed within the past four to six weeks. Can't remember who here first brought this up.

HTH.

It's quite simple -- I had this problem with my M40 all this time, trying to figure what exactly was going wrong.

The recoil spring is too light and gets easily "overwhelmed" by the "cocking" spring. They work in opposite directions, that is. As it happens, and you have your round in the chamber, the recoil spring simply doesn't have enough strength to bring the slide to full battery.

Sad.

Had the same problem I believe. Only happened with Sellor & Bellot Ammo. Mag tech ammo seems to be the best and most accurate ammo I have tried out of approx. 7-8 types, with no failures of any kind. Good luck

One thing you may want to check is the chamber. Sometimes the chamber tolerances are very tight, which makes the gun ammo sensitive. Reaming the chamber may help. Walthers are notorious for this. Just my $.02
