Steyr M40 New Trigger ?

So whats the deal with the free trigger job offered on all M series shipped before August 1st?
Do all pistols shipped after that have the "new" trigger? What serial does that correspond with (i.e. over 10K was supposed to be _perfect_)?

I REALLY want an M-40, but I can't reconcile with that trigger - the break feels horrible to me. I even had a gunsmith take down the range gun and he was not sure if he could do anything to it.
So what exactly does the new trigger do? Is there more play to the trigger, or is it that same darn near 8 pound pull with NO travel, and then a SUDDEN break?

If they have fixed that, I'm buying one tomorrow :D

Corse, here in the PRK I'll have to put it at the end of my already 3 month long list of guns to pick up :( ...

I had 2 different M40's here and the accuracy was ***horrible*** with 3 different bullet weights and loads. Even off the bench and sandbags, we were getting 6"-10" groups at 20 yards. The sights are great in my opinion, the trigger is okay, but the accuracy was the reason two of us dumped them. Even the wholesalers are dumping them now.

maxinquaye,

Like the press release says, it's a new improved, very consistent trigger update. I plan on getting one as soon as I can.

My 10,0xx M40 works perfectly and I'm surprised about the press release about the new trigger upgrade.

As the press release says, contact GSI if you have any questions about whether your new Steyr pistol has the new trigger or not. For example, right now there are still Steyr pistols in stores selling with some early serial numbers. And a lot of people are happy with their early M40's. But, the main point is, that Steyr has an upgrade policy that can't really be beaten.

When I get my trigger update, I'd be glad to share the results with you. But that might not be until Sep because I'm holding out for the M357. And my M40's working perfectly so I don't plan on sending it in :)

TVONE,

Regarding accuracy: Based on your results, I'd say you are uncomforable with the Steyr sights, trigger system, etc.

Using the tip of the front triangle for accuracy, I can get under 3" at 20 yards with my M40 and personal reloads. You can't really do better than that with a stock .40 S&W pistol with a 4" barrel, in general.

And for speed shooting, the large front sight is superior to typical 3 dot sights, in my opinion.

As for all the wholesalers dropping the Steyr, I think you're just a little off the mark :) If anything, they might be trying to trade them in for the newer improved models. There's a lot of interest in the new Steyr M series and especially the new subcompcat S series coming out shortly.

At any rate, I hope you find a gun or have a gun you feel more comfortable with. Having almost 1 foot accuracy at 20 yards would surely be quite frustrating :)

cheers,
pete

Pete, I recall you saying there was going to be a press release from Steyr on the 1st. I assumed this was it, but if it surprised you, then whats the good news?? :)

maxinquaye,

I like you :)

I suppose the main good news is the excellent support in order to get the early model M series working as expected for those that have had problems. It's always nice to know when the bugs have been fixed.

And the new S series subcompacts will take advantage of all the improvements and new trigger system right off the bat.

Sorry if you were expecting more. I'm frankly pleased as punch with my 10,000 series M40 and it is my new favorite gun.

cheers,
pete

Well, your all right as well pete. I wouldn't kiss ya, but your awright... :D

I think I'l harass my range to send their rental M-40 in, and if the new trigger feels right, I'm in!

Thanks for the help!

I have a X1300 ## M40 and I enjoy shooting it due to its accuracy. I know I occassionaly get a flier when the trigger pull gets irregular, which is probably less than once per mag, but I can shoot it more accurately than most handguns like the Beretta 92 and the Walther P99 especially if you shoot the later in DA first shot. I will be sending mine in at the end of the month because of a planned range trip has already been set up, Ill report later on the mods too. I heard that $35 GSI gift is included, which ofsets having to mail the gun in.

I purchased a Steyr M9 in July. I have seen no info published here in Finland about the upgrade yet, and nothing about it in Steyr-Mannlicher's own homepage (www.steyr-mannlicher.at). I e-mailed them last Thursday and asked about upgrade to European Styer owners, no answer so far, but I will inform when I get an answer. I hope Steyr respects European customers with same upgrade as they do to you Americans.
