Steyr M40 info, S model release update

just finished talking to Pete over at GSI, a very friendly and thoroughly helpful guy. answered a few questions I had about my M40, etc:

[NB! the answers are certainly not verbatim, but were taken as paraphrased notes. so while the factual info is as I heard it, the diction is mine, as are any mistakes.]

Q: will dry firing harm the gun?
A: unequivocal no. that may have been true with older guns, sometimes, but not with today's modern ones.

Q: how do I adjust the sights? mine is shooting left.
A: need to have a smith do it, one with a sight tool. precision set POA. suggest watching for left arm tension in the isometric stances, to avoid pulling to one side at the shot.

Q: I'm toying with the idea of putting a blank in as my first round, then Winchester SXTs for the rest. will the blanks harm the gun?
A: no, but he'd be concerned about their ability to cycle the slide properly

Q: what's the latest on the s40 release date?
A: expect arrival in late Sept, delivery to distributors early Oct, on shelf mid to late Oct. probably a small first release. .40s first, then 9mm shortly after. and actually, they're having second thoughts on .357 in the S model, they'll wait and see.

there are some .357 Ms due within 60 days. also, they're expecting .357 barrels for the M sometime in the unscheduled future.

Brent at GSI said this in an e-mail:

"Steyr does not recommend the dry firing of the M9 without snap caps, however, it will not hurt the pistol if it is not done frequently."

great. just ... great. I was hoping to get the last word from the horse's mouth, as it were, but now it seems there's at least shades of disagreement on their end as well.

but I certainly don't plan on dry firing all that often, at any rate. thanks for the the info, C.
