Steyr M-Series pistols

Anyone have expereince with these guns? Pros? cons? Prices? CDNN has them on sale for $369.00 in 9mm or .40 S&W.

One question I do have: Interchangability of barrels. Many pistol lines have drop-in replacement barrels to change calibers (.40 --> .357 sig, etc), does any such system exist for the Steyr line?

Thanks,
Mike

I read they (STEYR PISTOLS) were currently out of production. Maybe I read it here. The story said the factory was sold to BMW.

Mike - I have a .40 cal and have not been all that happy with it. Most unhappy with the trigger and the sights; although it has not had the trigger "upgrade" installed. I've had a few FTF's with it and a coupla instances where the slide didn't close completely. All of the above were with factory non-hollowpoints (all I can get here in H'berg). Understand that BMW bought the land on which the Steyr factory was located & that at least the pistols are out of production until further notice. On the up-side I like the feel/ergonomics of the grip and the fact that it has a safety. I look at the M9/M40 now kind of like the Colt AA2000: not all that good of a pistol but a nice one to hang onto from a collector's standpoint. Good luck - Geo

Well according to GSI, the pistols are not out of production. They told me they currently have plenty of M40's and a sufficient quantity of M9's on hand. Matter of fact, I'm ordering an M40 next week.

Word is that Steyr did in fact sell their existing facility but are/were in the process of moving to a new one.

But you're right, there does seem to be a good bit of discrepency about what the import status of Steyr firearms is. Especially the rifles.

If anyone KNOWS, please fill us in :)

GeoJelly, get the trigger upgrade, it will make a world of difference.

I've got an M40 and I love it. The trigger feels better then a Glock (not as mushy) and once you get used to the sights you'll probably like them...they're real quick. I've had zero problems with mine and it's more accurate then I am.

I thought cdnn had all remaining stock of M9's and M40's.
There are 2 reasons I don't trust CDNN.
1. They sell Steyr M series pistols with only 1 magazine (while they leave the factory with 2) I think that's a rip-off
2. They are claiming to have the "Last of the Steyr M Series Pistols" claiming that "they are never going to be made again" this smacks of those furniture stores that are always having a "Going out of Business" sale once a month.

GSI is the importer for Steyr and they have them in stock, so CDNN's a bunch of .......well this is a family forum so I'll reserve my comments.

According to the guys at GSI, Steyr should be back in full production within the next 6 months.

I never enjoeyed my M40. Ergonomically, it was nice, but the recoil was sharp and I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it... neither could any of my friends or the rangemaster of the range I usually go to.

Moreover, I had a lot of problems reselling the thing, as well, as the majority of the local dealers told me "the things just don't move" or "we got a lot of returns on those, no thanks."

Finally traded for a CZ75. I never looked back.

I like my M9 a lot. Very accurate, very little muzzle flip. The M40 and M357 barrels do interchange, but I don't believe GSI will sell separate barrels at this point.

FWIW--

The story I read is that BWM coveted the plant & property which the Steyr factory occupied, and was trying to buy it to expand. At the last minute, the negotiations failed, and the Bank of Austria (which owned Steyr), instead sold Steyr to two investors. This kept Steyr from being put out of business. There may be more details to the story, but these are the facts I've read. Maybe they are still moving to another site, but they're alive and well, I think.

Thanks for the info.

I'm going to try to find one to shoot prior to buying. It looks like one of those guns that would either be very liked or very loathed by me- I'm just not sure which.

Mike

I chose an M9 over the Glock 19. The Glock was/is a great pistol but the Steyr just felt better in my hand. The ergonomics are excellent, recoil is light and I can shoot it quite accurately. I really don't have any complaints with it at all.

It also appears from GSI that Steyr is in fact still a viable entity and GSI plans on continuing to provide sales and service.

Like a lot of more radical designs, however, it has a bit of the love it or hate it characteristics. I love it. YMMV.
