Steyr M Series Pistols

I'm considering the purchase of the M series in 9mm. I read a good article in Combat Handguns praising the Steyrs but I don't place much stock in their opinions. I've never seen them say, "hey, this gun is a POS". Therefore, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on the Steyr. I'm also looking at the P99 and I thank you all for your responses on that gun. Happy shooting.

I have the Steyr M 40. I use the gun for competition in IDPA. It performs flawlessly week after week with over 1000 rounds put through it so far. Its ergonomically the best pistol I've ever held. The triangle sights take some getting use too, but are quick and effective. Its possibly the most accurate pistol I've ever owned. The short trigger is sweet and quick on the double taps. The recoil is extremely managable, even better in 9mm, so I've heard.
My only complaint is the slide serrades. It gets real hot and humid in TN and when I have to pull the slide back to show a clear chamber for the IDPA match saftey officer, I can barely grip the serrades on the slide with my sweaty hands. There just isn't much to grip, so my hand slips off and I usually have to use my shirt. I currently seeking a way to remedy this, so any suggestions are greately appreciated. Also at the last match I had two light primer hits that didn't fire the round, I called GSI and they said send it in that it sounds like it may need the trigger upgrade and just got missed.

Its a great gun and I love it :D

There are several methods of increasing the grip-a-bility of your slide.
1. Have a GOOD machinest mill the grooves deeper.
2. Stipple the top and bottom of the grooves.

Unfortunately, this usually means a reblue.

Can't help with the Steyr...

Buying a new house this spring has just trashed my gun purchasing plans for AT LEAST this year, but the Steyr remains high on my wish list. As for the P99, I love mine, and you'll find many others here who also shout praise for the Walther. In fact, there have been two or three large strings posted about the P99 in just the last couple of weeks. If you don't see them in the most recent list, just run a search for "P99", I'm sure you'll find a lot of helpful info.
Now if I can just slip away from all the projects I'm 'sposed to be doin around here, & find time to shoot the guns I DO have...

Good luck, safe shooting!

I purchased my M9 almost a year ago as my first firearm purchase. I originally hated the inconsistent trigger pull, loved the sights tho. After having the trigger upgrade performed, I now enjoy it thoroughly. It is always in my range bag when I go. Mine does not like to eat HP, but FMJ works wonderfully in it.

Well,

I'm waiting for a bit on the M Series guns. I just got an email back from Steyr saying they are considering adding a .45 ACP version to the line-up once their big move is completed. Man I hope so!

Regards,

Warm Bore

Hmm... Steyr M45 :)

I get this tingling feelin in my pants when I think about it ;)

however I think I'm just going to get the M40 now (by the time the M45 hits the market...who knows, guns might be illegal. )

comparison

Can someone compare the size of the M9 to the S9?

Better yet, can someone compare either of these to a Ruger P95 as far as size, hold, etc.

I'm not able to "view before I buy" and am trying to get a feel for the size of the M9/S9.

Thanks.

.45 ACP is the caliber that Bubits originally designed for the gun. If you have an opportunity compare the slide width on the Steyr with a Glock 9mm or .40 and you will see. Another thing about the Steyr in .45 is that it was originally designed to use the Colt 1911 magazines as well. The powers that be (were?) at Steyr decided on a different sequence for releasing models that was envisioned by Bubits. Looks like the new owner may allow more marketing input from his designer. An S45 would be sharp as well, though I think the L45 is scheduled for release sooner. One thing to watch for though is that IF Steyr products are still imported to the U.S. after the first of the year is that you may see a substantial price increase. I have heard increases of up to 50% so that $399 M9 could go for $600 next year.

I didn't like the factory sights on my M40 and M357, so I recently replaced then with IMX three-dot night sights. I got them from Brownells for $50 a set, but they were a special-order item, and took about two months to get. Here are some photos I took of my M357:

GSI info

Just talked to a sales rep at GSI and asked a number of questions...to which he had answers.

1) Steyr is NOT going out of business. They were bought and will be STAYING in the same facility they are in now. BMW is not buying their place.

2) Steyr is NOT stopping their export of guns to the US. However, with the transition of ownership, there could be a delay in getting some guns or parts. This delay could be as long as 6 months.

3) There are plans for an M45, however, the sales rep said he doesn't foresee this gun coming out for another 1 - 1/2 years. He was definite on the timeline.

4) I found out that SOME of the guns they sent to dealers (ones advertised with 1 clip) are considered demos by GSI, but don't panic because its really all semantics. His definition of "DEMO" was this: These particular guns needed a trigger upgrade and it was performed. They were then brought to the range and test fired (maybe 1 clip's worth) to assess that the upgrade was done properly. Every 5th gun was tested, yet they were all labeled as DEMOS.

5) Which brings me to my last point. Someone on another thread speculated that some dealer (CDNN in this case) had bought all the DEMOS and Refurbished M9 pistols from GSI and therefore could offer them at a discounted price ($369.99 w/ 1 clip). Well, the guns are demos -- possibly -- but according to the sales rep they are NOT refurbs. He said that they've never sent a gun back to be refurbished.

Hope this information is helpful. Just FYI

a little off-topic

Alaska1993,

If you are still keeping track of this thread, I have a recomendation for you. You might want to look into getting a subscription to Gun Tests. The website is at www.gun-tests.com and it is the best magazine I have read about guns. The little problem you noticed regarding the reveiws in the big gun magazines does not happen in Gun Tests. They often pan guns, and they often get letters from Presidents and Vice-Presidents expressing their dismay. But honestly, it's a great rag and one that I read front-to-back the moment I get my hands on it.

I overlaid the S40 and M40. I believe the only difference between the two is the barrel and grip lengths...the controls match up perfectly.

At the combat training I went to, I used my Steyr M40. 2000 rounds in 1 week. No problems.

Because of the easy to view triangle sights, I can double tap the same hole from 7 yards :-)

Also, because of the sights, I can shoot with both eyes open just as accurately as I can with one eye closed. I love my gun. It's DAO so just pull it out and pull the trigger, no safeties to mess with. But I can have a safety on if I want to, for longer periods of carry, which I can't do with Glocks.

Utterly reliable, sweet to shoot, low recoil, low muzzle flip, low bore axis (lower than Glock) and all the other goodies that's just way too much to list.

Buy it, no regrets.

Albert
