I have always wanted to own a Steyr Aug, but a lot of firearms are restricted in New Jersey. However I have not been able to find a new list of what weapons are stricted since the the Sunset of the A.W.B. Does anyone know if it is legal to own a Steyr Aug in New Jersey? Thanks.

Evan Nappen, NJ attorney with an emphasis on weapon laws, tried a case on the lawfulness of using the word "type" or "substantially identical" in the current state NJ Ban. The precedent is now set, as I understand it, that as long as the gun is not explicitly on NJ's ban list, you can have it even if it is of the same "type". So, for example, a XM15 is legal while an AR15 is not. Under that interpretation, you would be able to get a US-made AXG or STG-556 when they come out as they are not explicitly named by the ban.

That said, if they want to bring you in, they probably can and will... they'll just run into the precedent set by the above case down the road.
