Steyr AUG, how does it rate?

As I will be joining the Australian Defence Force shortly I would like to know of anyones opinion in regards to the Steyr AUG. If you could be as specific as possible as well, thanks.

The trigger might need some getting used to since it controls the modes of fire. Same "problem" with all bullpups: brass ejection cannot be changed on-the-fly. I was disappointed at the "cheapness" of the 1.5x Swarovski scope. Overall though, I'll take an AUG over a M-16.

The Austrian AUG is a good gun, though it suffers from the tactical weaknesses inherent in the bullpup design. But the AUSTRALIAN AUG, unfortunately for you, is produced locally in Australia rather than imported and has had numerous quality control problems. The Aussie soldiers I have talked with don't like it too much.
Good luck with yours.

Pretty sure this has been hashed out at length here on TFL, and it wasn't pretty for the Oz AUG, but I don't have specifics. Search being down is a pain.

I did check to make sure that the thread I was remembering wasn't on FALFiles, don't think it was.

I'm originally from Oz, and have a friend who's served for some time.

While he has not been in combat (who HAS who is in service now), he has tried out the various rifles available in many capacities - M16, FAL/SLR and Aug.

We discussed the Aug a while back. For some reason he kept referring to it as the "Steyr" - may have just been a term they use, or he MAY have been meddling with some before the army switched to it officially, I don't know.

He appreciated the 1.5x scope as a nice touch - taking him from 50% 300 yard head-hits to near 100%.

As a right-hander, he had no problems there with the bullpup. But some major advantages were that patrolling with the Aug is easier on the arm and back muscles (than with the FAL) because it's easier to hold - and that leaves your arms better off for shooting afterwards. Also, he claimed the advantages were shown at the range as it could be swung around between targets WAY fast - center of gravity being closer to the body, and ergonomics agreeing with him.

Remember, a lot here (no offense to many here who don't) fire off a bench a lot. You're going to have to "go bush" with your weapon, sometimes in up to 48 celcius in heavy clothing and carrying a lot of other stuff.

Battler.

I also own an AUG and I'm agreeing with the people here -
awful trigger (euphemism for 'getting used to'), but I'd maybe add the
mag release and the fact that it doesn't have a bolt release catch,
and maybe they could make these optics 2.5x instead of 1.5x and add
some real open sights that will be precise up to 50m.

Maybe it should have some way to easily add some belt-feeding
mechanism - it could probably do well as an LMG or SAW.
