Stevens Model 311E Firing Prematurely !!

Stevens Model 311E. Firing when barrels are closed. Sometimes just one barrel and occasionally both barrels will fire just as you close them. Any repair suggestions appreciated ! Fingers ARE off the triggers . Could it be the SEARs ?

It sounds like one or both firing pins are sticking or being held in the extended forward/fired position ILO withdrawing into their respective holes when the gun is opened/cocked.

The gun is going to need to be disassembled for a look-see & a FP recess cleaning at a minimum - so if you're not conversant with it's dis & re-assembly, take it to a double gunsmith (not an 870 parts-changer).

Sometimes - IF you're REALLY lucky - a powerful flush through the face of the FP holes will dislodge any crud; BUT, that won't cure a broken/chipped part, or keep the dislodged crud from migrating elsewhere within the action (like to the triggers/sears).

If you have grooves across the base of the hulls then the firing pins are stuck. If not then the sears are probably worn.

Sounds Great Guys ! Thanks for the Info ! I'll take a good look at the Pin Holes for crud then decide from there as to Disassemble further to clean or just take it in. Appreciate the Advise from all !
 
Barrels Removal

While we,re still on it, Anyone know how to remove the DBL. Barrels off the Reciever ( Frame ). ? Usually, Its just remove hand guard, open and lift off. Not on this Model 311 E. They don't lift off right away, there's something else ?any info appreciated .....
 
Remove forearm, open barrels and lift off. Dunno what could be preventing them from coming off. You are pulling the complete forearm assembly off and not just removing the screw and taking the wood off right?
 
The foreend problem may relate to the firing on closing problem. It sounds like there might be trouble in the cocking plunger that is not fully cocking the hammers so they fall prematurely.

Hold the opening lever all the way to the right/open, when you try to unhook the bbls, as that should hold the hammers in the cocked position.

If that's your problem, don't fool around cleaning it out - get it to a double gunsmith.
