Stevens 87A (mag tube question)

I took apart a old Stevens 87A to clean it up (rust) and to clean the bottom of the barrel I took off the tube but I'm having problems putting it back. It's hard to explain but there's a lifter section which feeds the bullet, then theres the tube and the lifter slides into the tube. When I tried putting the whole assemble back together there's a problem. The lifter slides down into a slot and the tube slides to the side into a dovetail. They are to close together to at the same time so what do I do? I really don't want to bring a gun in a bag to a gunsmith :o

I can supply pictures if needed.

Thanks in advance!

The magazine tube and it's dovetail hanger shouldn't need to be slid to the side for R&R - magazine tubes are usually pinned to the dovetail hanger with a very small pin that fits half it's diameter in the tube wall and half in the inside of the hanger hole that was bored through for the magazine tube to be slid (in/out, forward/back) in the hanger, for repair after removing the crosspin.

Since you apparently removed the hanger & tube while they were still attached to each other as described above, I would suggest you drive out the crosspin in the hanger with a small drift pin, install only the hanger back into the bbl dovetail - and only then insert the rear end of the magazine tube into the front of the hanger & slide it back for the remainder of the re-assembly.

Be sure to orient the tube as it's slid into the hanger, so the crosspin's notch in the tube wall in uppermost, so it will interface with the half-hole/notch inside the hanger hole when the tube's fully seated - that way the crosspin should be easy to re-install to fix the tube in position.

Ok I think I understand but my hanger doesnt have a pin. The tube's outer shell is a cylinder that has a seem all the way down it (It would be on the 12 o'clock position when assembled). Where my hanger has the hole the seem on the tube was dented upward to keep the tube in a fixed position. So I can push that down with a few taps then pull the tube out, attach the hanger back on, slide the tube back in with the previous dent lined up and, once in correct position, make the dent again.

Is that the correct procedure?

Sorry if thats hard to understand and I can try clarifying if needed.
Thanks!

Yes - it seems that someone lost the crosspin and dented the outer magazine tube upward at the seam, where the tube passes through the hanger, as an expedient/repair.
