Stevens 511 S/S-barrel removal

I've had for a number of years an inexpensive s/s 12 gauge Stevens. On this particular gun you cannot take off the fore-stock so you can remove the barrels from the action. I did it once but it is a lot of work. Is there a fairly easy way to modify this shotgun so you can take off the fore-stock and remove the barrel in a normal manner? Thanks.

You can take the forearm off but there is a steel rod that keeps the barrel on the action- I never saw anything similar. In any event I was wondering if there was some sort of an easy modification so I could take off the barrel for cleaning. Like a lot of cheap s/s guns the action sort of springs shut a little from a low hammer problem so...if I can modify to take off the barrel I'll then fix the low hammer problem so the gun opens fully and stays that way.

That's your hinge pin - take the forearm off, then use the lever to open the action - the barrels should come right off in your hand

No, this steel rod runs lengthwise under the barrel. I have taken the barrel off the gun following a diagram but it was a PITA. On a typical s/s you pop off the fore-stock open the action and take off the barrel.

Speculation on my part, as I haven't seen your gun, but it sounds to me as tho you have removed the forend wood, possibly by removing a screw or two, and left the forend iron in place. The forend, if it doesn't have an external latch on the bottom side, snaps into place with a spring loaded latch of a couple different designs. The forend on these is removed by pulling downward on the forend, and some are pretty stiff, a good thing. I suggest since you have removed the wood, try putting a screwdriver between the barrel rib and the "rod" that you spoke of and pulling downward gently. I bet the "rod" pops off the stud it is snapped on to and you can reinstall the forend iron into the wood and leave it there. Goatwhiskers the Elder

It cocks different from a regular 311- total different design- there is a rod surrounded by a coil spring. You can depress the spring and then slide the rod sideways and take off the barrel- lots of work. That's why I was wondering if there was some sort of quick fix.
