Stevens 311 with slugs

I have a Stevens 311R J series. It's a 18 1/4" barreled one made for law enforcement. I wanted to carry it with me while i hike an fish the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Because its lighter and handier than my rifles and more powerful than any hand gun. I want to use Brennek Black magic 1 3/8 slugs. Any one used these? Are they worth it?
 
I have used brenneke and they work on deer well. Any chance of getting a solid copper like winchester makes? I see them hold together well in deer.
 
I've used Brennek before too and like them. But that was an 870 slug gun. I'm just a little worried about my SxS. I've over heard some claim it will seperate the barrels. Well the Black Magic 3" shells any way. I like my lil' old 311 and want to keep it around.

Never heard that about a double but then I dont shoot or own any doubles myself. My son has a double but no slugs thru it.

If it is a valuable gun get another 870 and put a sling on it.
 
Years ago when I started hunting a Stevens 311 was my only gun. I tried it with both slugs and buckshot for my first year of deer hunting. For very close range work like you have in mind it would probably be OK. But hitting anything beyond 15 yards or so is pretty tough with a double and slugs.
 
10-15 yards or less is what i'm thinking. I my wifes family lives around Sterling Alaska and we go up once or twice a year for hunting and fishing. Recently chucked the ex-wife out of our old house because she was behind on mortgage and taxes. Blew all my extra cash and took out a small loan to catch it up. So, while i can come up with money enough for a ticket or a gun i can't do both. So i am using what i have. This gun is basicly for the last ditch effort against the bear i can't just avoid.
 
Brenneke slugs

Seems like I read somewhere that Brenneke slugs were issued to some agencies in AK as bear medicine.

The 18" Model 311 is pretty scarce, at least I have never seen one. Alaska fishing trips could be a bit rough on it, but.......it may be rough already.

For all your going to shoot it, I doubt that some slug ammo will hurt it. But shoot it a bit, to see at what distances the barrels are regulated or if they're well regulated at all.

I have a cheap Baikal double that does not shoot to point of aim with one barrel and only close to it with the other. Needless to say, it gets the IC choke tubes and buckshot.
 
It's in good shape. I'm constantly in need of a hair cut an a mustache trim but, my guns are always cleaned oiled. It's choked cylinder in both barrels. Like i said it was built for law enforcment. So it was probably built for buckshot.

Wasn't implying you don't maintain your guns.

What I mean is that a 311R (I think that's right) is a pretty rare bird. I can't see how an Alaskan fishing trip would do it any good. Strapped to a pack frame for a week or two, yikes. Likely depreciate it a good deal.

I'd find a beater Mossberg or 870 first.
 
Didn't take it as an insult Ranger. Just repeating what my sergeant is always B#%^&ing about. And i quote "you need a trim boy, gimme that rifle." Hard to keep it high an tight when your never near a place to plug in clippers. But i always have a rag an oil. I work part time in a gun shop and we bought that gun for 145.00 The owner gave it to me for Christmas that year. Because he knew i wanted it. I keep it a Henry mini-bolt and a marlin 60 behind my truck seat and fishing poles in the window rack. You never know when you get a chance at huntin' or fishin'.
 
If slugs will separate the barrels on my 311R, neither the gun nor I were ever told. :)

Barrel regulation is your biggest limitation, if you can put a pair of slugs close enough together at 25 yards to be effective, you're in.
15 yards could do, but considering how fast a typical bear can run....

I'd stick to the Brennekes.
Conventional hollow Foster rifled slugs are both light-for-weight and too soft. A Foster can easily flatten out on a bear's skull or other heavy bone, a Brenneke typically has much greater penetration.

Yea, that's close. But the guns idea is a last ditch effort kinda thing any way. If it gets that close, it's because A: I didn't see it or B: It is determind to get me. I tried to use it once to shoot squirrels. It must make a doughnut pattern with #7 shot. Because i never missed so much in my life. Most shots under 15 yards.
