Steve McQueen's Original Mare's Leg Sold - in France of all places.

Many Europeans grew up watching what we did

I've met Germans vacationing her in the US that are fascinated by places such as Tombstone, Dodge City and anything to do with cowboys or indians. Many of them belong to social clubs that feature western saloon style bars, cowboy poetry and chaps. Not just Germans, but Swedes, French and Swiss too.

I mean the chaps could be for other reasons;) but I'm surprised at how many germans own a pair.

I Giggled the auction. :)
Found references to a 94, which was never used by McQueen. He used 92s.

Found a photo, quite obviously different from any of the three Leg versions used.

The one thing that always cracked me up,,,

Notice the cartridges in his gunbelt,,,
They are not 44-40 cartridges,,,
They are 45-70 cartridges.

I read where the producers thought they looked better.

The one thing I always wondered about the Mare's Leg,,,
Was simply why?

The only thing I could think of was that it might be a bit faster to load,,,
And you could top off your magazine easier,,,
But that's all I can think of.

Why?
To create a TV gun that would stand out in the crowd back then & STILL be talked about (and even copied) over 50 years later. :)
Worked, huh?

Thanks to the movie folks, as a kid I too laughed at the cartridges in his belt and on a few episodes he actually loads from the belt----NOT ! Also love all the Mexican Banditos with crossed belts of 8mm Mauser or 30-06 ammo for the 1892 Winchester carried. But the best thing is all of the 300 yard shots knocking Mr. bad Guy off his horse and the 92 being shot is missing front or rear sights.

I recall one episode where he did load (sorta) from his belt.
Pulled a round from a loop & started to make the motions of loading, then turned away from the camera so it wasn't possible to see he wasn't actually doing it.

One of my MLs has no sights, I can hit a 2x2 foot target at 25 yards by aiming, even without 'em.
Have not tried it out to 300 though. :)
