stepped cylinders

can someone give the dimesnions for the stepped cylinders on modern reproduction colts/ ive been thinking on the length of the non tapered section lately and could use a little help.

I think you are referring to "rebated" cylinders as in the reduced area of the cylinder. The rebated area gives it that "stepped" look. It might be helpful for you to specify the specific models you are interested in.

Not sure what you mean by the "non-tapered" section but the dimensions of the rebated cylinder on my 1860 Army (.44 cal) are as follows:

Front (engraved section) - 41mm diameter, 27mm length
Rear (rebated section) - 39mm diameter, 20mm length

If this is not the model or caliber you are interested in, be more specific.

my buddy wants to do a conversion of a colt with rebated cylinder that can use a completely rimmed cartridge. im tyring to figure out the overall dimensions on the cylinders to figure out what would most likely work based on case dimension.

1860 1862 pockets

what i need is overall length of cylinder, the lenth of engraved section, the diameter of cylinder at chamber mouth, the engraved section diameter for the spot it meets the rebated section.
the diameter of the rebated section where it meets the engraved section, the diamter at the end of the rebated section. also diameter of the star and the length of star.

If your buddy wants to do a conversion, wouldn't it make sense that he have the gun that we wants to convert, and get the measurements himself ???? [puzzled]

idea is to get rough dimensions on the various options, narrow down a model that fits within parameters of project, and then get the gun and make hte project happen.

its kinda along the lines of "i want to research outboard motors before i spend 10,000 so i can compare 3 by hooking them on by boat for a quick run on the lake"
