I know the Browning is okay for steel shot.

Browning site FAQ -

"1. WILL ACCEPT ALL CURRENT FACTORY STEEL SHOT LOADS: All Browning shotguns with the Invector choke or Invector-Plus tube systems, However, we do not recommend the use of Invector full or extra full chokes with steel shot. They pattern too tightly, and sometimes result in a "blown" pattern."

Was the Ithaca model one of the ones imported by SKB? If so, it appears that only the ones with choke tubes are safe for steel shot.

I still don't have any gun books at the office, so I can't look up manufacturing info to try and find who made what. The SKB FAQs list a lot of info though.

I have two flats of 12 ga #7 and one in 20 ga. I will be using them if possible. they cost $60 a flat. Im ok with the browning but not sure on the other two guns. They were manu. before steel shot.

If not steel or lead, what...

I have a 12 ga, Ithaca featherweight pump (John Browning design) made before 1955 with a Herter choke. What shot material and size would best compare to or outperform (#5 shot in lead), when hunting pheasants? Thanks for your replies.

Steel shot may be Ok or may not be?

Went to a big time gun shop in the Metro area of SE MI and got the answer that the used Remington 1100, I held in my hands and offered for the $ difference beween 5 boxes of steel vs 5 boxes of "Hevi-shot," "could safely shoot steel shot as long as it wasn't a full choke." "Only the older Brownings had soft barrels," the man said. Any takers on that one?
