Steel shot question

I just got an older Remington 1100, it has a sweet skeet barrel on it and my hunt club does not require steel shot.
However I am going to some state land this weekend and just was concerned about shooting steel in my skeet barrel, or am just being over cautious?

I have a feeling this is going to be along the line of should I break it in or not..:)
Thanks
Brian

If you plan to continue to use steel shot in the gun in any significant amount, then you should simply buy a new barrel for the gun that is rated for use with steel. If you only plan to occasionally shoot steel out of it, I believe that you can get away with doing that. Especially if it is more mild steel target loads that you are shooting.

A new barrel would also have a screw in choke system, which would have the extra benefit of converting your gun into being a more useful general purpose shotgun.

That is what I did with the Browning Auto-5 that I inherited from my Dad years ago when he past away. I bought a newer barrel for it that accepts screw in chokes.

It would be a good investment in the gun for the long term, to have another more modern and versatile barrel available to use with it.
