Steel shot for waterfowl only?

I'm wondering if steel shot can be used for and is available in shot sizes for upland birds and larger game. I know many of you will bust my b*tt for considering this, due to performance, but my reasons are mostly ethical. I'd like to minimize my spreading around of lead in the environment if feasable.

I'm especially thinking about #3 shot for turkey. I'll be using a 12 ga pump (Mossberg 500.)

If you can set up to get shots within 35 or 40 yards, no butt busting is imminent, or needed. The big disadvantage of steel, less inertia, manifests itself at longer ranges, and steel pattern nicentight, like a turkey load should.

Check local regs, tho, here lead is the only legal load, and then in 4-6 shot only.

dont ever use steel shot for any hunting in the woods...the insight that you gain from this may be short lived....steel has a nasty habit of bouncing of objects and coming straight back at you..I am aware of one death where a duck hunter fired into the H20 and the bounce took out a hunter in a duck blind near by..steel shot should never be used for turkey hunting nor any hunting near trees or other object....

#3 shot size is illegal for turkey hunting in many states..its usually 4s,5s,6s...so be sure and check your local game laws

Copper or nickle plated shot is the best bet for turkeys. I don't like to think about using steel shot in my woods (lots of loose granite)...
Heavi-shot for turkeys-neat idea.

On majority of State and Federal Refuges lead shot is
NOT ALLOWED. Doesn't matter if you are hunting water fowl or other game. Check with your Local Wildlife Agency before going on State or Federal lands.
