Steel frame for hanging targets/plates?

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the place to post this, but figured it is as good as any. My local outdoor range is great, but pretty plane jane. It's just 15-20 benches along the firing line, then open for a good 300-400 yards ending at a good sized mountain. No steel targets, no gongs, nothing like that already there. It's pretty much just bring your own targets or old junk and blow it up- literally, exploding targets are fairly common. Lots of fun.

Anyway, my range buddies and I are tired of finding boxes or other things tall enough to hang targets on. Old furniture (desks, wall units, entertainment centers) are great but usually made of wood and get shot up fairly quickly. And if they're in good enough shape to shoot again, nobody wants to haul it back to their place until next time.

I'm thinking of building a some sort of a frame, maybe 6x6 made from steel pipe and connected with fittings. We could just screw the pieces into each other to set it up, then hang plates/targets/etc. from it, and unscrew it when we are done. Reusable and easy to transport.

I'd be willing to spend some money on this, and my buddies feel the same way. The problem is, I have no idea where to start. I'm planning on checking some industrial supply type places here locally this week, but I'm wondering if there is an easier/more direct route.

Has anybody done/seen anything like this? Is this a feasible project, or are we up in the night?

Why steel??

Fast cheap and easy to construct a frame of PVC pipe. While not bulletproof, the parts are cheap and easy to replace if they are shot.

If the ground is fairly soft make stakes out of sched. 80 pipe it's the thick wall PVC, just cut at a long angle lengthwise and sharpen the end.

PVC will fit together tightly without gluing it together.

Makes a decent frame, and it can be taken apart for compact storage.

The PVC is a decent plan. If you look around, there's some steel target hangers for swingers made to fold and move easily. I've made a couple from scrap angle iron that will fold to the size of a card table while providing 24" wide by 15" high target space.
